What you're looking for is a reed switch. Radioshack has them. You may have to make you're
own housing.

Yes, they're common components in burglar-alarm systems. I used one from Radio Shack as the cadence
sensor on our tandem. Home supply stores should have them as well.

If you are trying to fix an existing speedo, bracket/cable/sensor is available aftermarket - at
least for CatEye.

Also - a plug for Cateye - on all the units I've seen the brackets/sensors are interchangable. A
nice feature after you've caught a wire on one of your tire lugs for about the third time and the
bracket/wire needs replacing. Also nice if you just want to move the speedo from one bike to another
depending on which one you ride.

You could also simply buy a sensor at a bike shop and cut off the existing computer mount. This
would give you a switch, wire, and waterproof housing for about $10-12.

Better yet, look for a blowout deal on a discontinued computer at the mail order joints. I've seen
Cateye Mity 3's for 3-4 bucks.
