  1. So after his Japan Cup IB will be doing 4weeks active recovery of 2-3 rides per week of between 2-3hours @ low intensity.

    Just before this, he did a VO2 max test for a TV documentary. Apparently he was only mean to pretend for the video but after a 5min warmup and 5min of "pretending" the TV crew asked him if he would be able to do a REAL test, which would provide better pictures :-)

    So while he may be a bad actor here are some figures for those interested.

    VO2 Max Test

    VO2 5.760 L/min
    VCO2 6.458 L/min

    VO2/kg 83.5 mL/kg/min
    VCO2/kg 93.6 mL/kg/min

    VE(BTPS) 215.8 L/min

    Max HR: 196
    Max Power: 490 Watts 7.1 Watt/kg

    Ananerobic Threshold

    VO2 4.680 L/min
    VCO2 4.824 L/min

    VO2/kg 67.8 mL/kg/min
    VCO2/kg 69.9 mL/kg/min

    VE(BTPS) 129.1 L/min

    AT HR: 175
    AT Power: 380 Watts 5.5 Watt/kg

    Not bad at all. This is as good or better than any elite rider. Basso’s numbers are much better than those expected of an average pro rider. He would not parade his numbers if he was not aware of the fact his talent is apparent in those numbers.

    Keep in mind, it was May when he wasn‘t preparing for any actual racing. The VO2 max of 84 alone is worth something. Anaerobic threshold at 78% of maximum aerobic power is a bit on a low side. It’s likely to reach 83- 85% if supplemented by hard racing. Still, considering Basso can produce 5.5 w/kg at the anaerobic threshold is impressive because he is likely to raise it by 5-7% if losing some weight and getting some racing legs. The testing was using gas expiration dynamics. Compared to blood lactate it underestimates wattage outputs.

  4. This test was completed about 2 weeks ago, not in May BUT given the fact theat he didn't do much racing at all I think there's probably scope for better values as you say.

    I noticed that at VO2max he generates 85 W/L of O2, while at his AT he generates 81 W/L of O2: he is more efficient at the highest effort! This sounds rather counterintuitive to me. Could it be something related to the testing protocol or my intuitions are wrong?

  7. 5/11/2008 is november 5th 2008 in italy...in the US, that would be may

    also, like all tests the protocol is just as important as the results! i wouldn't put much thought into the numbers

    I quoted the dates from the test: 05/11/2008 = 5 November 2008

    I certainly don't want to get into a date argument over a simple posting but I would assume that anyone reading a report from outside the US should take those dates as being in the format used in the Country the document originated
    from.

    ANYWAY............back to the more interesting power stuff................

    i thought anaerobic threshold doesnt exist.
    also, i sure hope that number they give is what he can hold for 2hours or he will get dropped like a rock on the climbs(5.5 w/kg is nothing to write home about for ftp, but without more info i have no idea what they mean)

    ps the whole date thing arose when somebody claimed it was may, i realize it was nov.
    i would assume at least 95% of americans have no idea there is a different date format

    "Max power" is not the same as the (minimal) power that elicits VO2max. IOW, it isn't a steady-state value (not that you can actually achieve steady-state at VO2max!) upon which one can base economy calculations.
