new chain

You should try to lube your chain prior to rides and keep it lubed regularly, especially if you are in a wet climate, which I suspect you are. Water is the enemy of many a bike part.

I don't think you need to lube before every ride. Excess lube just becomes a big dirt and dust magnet. You should lube after any ride in the rain.....or snow. Otherwise, lubing every 100-150 miles or so, is an alright schedule.

In my experience with three new bikes in 2 years the chains are prelubed,in fact one of my bikes only gets ridden on nice dry days, has 400 miles of use and the chain is not rusty nor is it kinked, and seems to function fine. Lubing isn't a big deal but the others are right, if you don't lube after a wet ride then the water will sit and form rust. I don't think this has much to do with why the chain slipped off however. The reason for that may be anything but 😕

New chains have a protective coating on them for storage and shipping, not for riding.

I clean my chains thoroughly before installing, then apply my favorite lube. Purple Extreme doesn't attract the dirt or have the build-up that some lubes have. Give it a try.

Riding with a dry chain in a wet climate and it can rust. The initial goop on chains doesn't last forever. When you chain 'chirps', squeeks, lube after that ride.

DO NOT lube before every ride. If you do, the chain will become a black mess, lube mixed with dirt, that will wear things out quickly.

A new bike can have a cheap chain on it, and the pre-lube also cheap.

The chain jumping off can be due to a stiff link in the chain (caused by the rust)or the front derailleur limit screws need adjusting.

I'm glad a thread was brought up about chains. On my Allez Elite I thought about replacing the chain due to just this exact same thing, slight rust has begun to develop on the original chain and was wondering what kind of chain some of you would recommend replacing it with? Still using the 9 speed and 105's.

Replace a chain for elongation, not for rust. Oil it and keep using it.

A little surface rust is no big deal as long as it doesn't develop tight links and such. When you do replace it, least expensive compatible chain. Big dollar high end chains are shiney and plated and such but don't perform any better than a low end one.

Tight links from rust tend to disappear over a few days of riding with regular relubrication. My other half recently rehabilitated a chain with every link tight from rust - she'd left it for some months after riding in the rain..
