  1. We have had a visit from a Campagnolo, USA rep and also one of the Campagnolo product guys from a BIG US distributor and some interesting and hopefully useful info.

-'Escape' type LH ERGO action gone. That is, with 2007/8 Centaur and below, LH ERGO was positional ala shimano and sram, limiting the ability to smoothly and consistently shift the front chainrings. Back a more familiar, 'ratcheting friction' of Record and Chorus.

-RH 'one higher cog at a time' gone also. Same for Centaur and below, only able to select one higher(thumb button) cog at a time, also ala sram and shimano. back is the ability to 'dump' the chain onto more than one higher gear at a time.

-Pricing-yep, Super Record is gonna be expensive, but so is 7900 DA and I suspect Red will go up in price also. Record on the other hand, will be about the same as 2008 and Chorus will be also.

Groups look good, very comfy hand positions, and I will see about what is compatible with what, 11s, 10s ders type thing, as soon as we get our first 11s stuff, hopefully end of August or so.

Forgot to mention, Centaur will have an aluminum lever and crank option as well for less $. Veloce is essentially Mirage, plastic levers, same action and options as Centaur. Centaur looks like a great group to compete with ultegra and sram.

  3. I'm looking forward to the year 2020 when we have 20 speed systems and rear spacing of 200mm to fit all of them😄.

Just got a set of 2009 Veloce levers and they are nice. Escape and QS is GONE(hooray), right lever does multiple up and down shifts, left is essentially a ratcheting firction ala 2008 Chorus, back to the future!!

Levers are black aluminum(not plastic), and Centaur will have carbon OR aluminum levers.

I tried to take the right lever apart but the 3mm bolt was VERY tight, so didn't want to force it. As soon as I get a parts blowup, or get one apart, I'll share the info. Front part of the shifter looks VERY similar to Chorus of 2008.

Altho all the hype about 2009 Campagnolo seems centered around 11s but the real story is the much improved ergonomics of the levers, the reintroduction of very functional left and right levers(copy to sram), the emphasis on Campagnolo being a premium component group maker(let sram and shimano have the low end), with genuine improvements, not just hidden cables or electronic(still don't see the advantage of that, from either company).

Once again, when we get the 11s Chorus, we'll see what's compatible with what, rear derailleur wise, and let ya'll know!!

  5. Cool beans. Please do keep us informed. I am seriously considering raiding the parts bin and replacing that evil Shimano 105 stuff on my second road bike with a combination of Campagnolo 2004 Chorus and new 2009 Centaur... 😄

  6. Peter, when you have the time, could you to test & report back on whether the 2009 10-speed Veloce/Centaur shifters will work with the current rear derailleurs, or not?

    Thanks.

Already know they do. The only question mark is 11s. Centaur and Veloce are essentially unchanged except for LEVER shape. But innards are ala 2008 Chorus. I'll bet the basic dimensions of the 11s RD is the same as 10s with less distance between RD cage, but otherwise the same. I'll also bet you can upgrade to 11s with just a lever set, cogset and chain. Campag will probably say it isn't possible but they said that about 10s also(isn't true except in the minds of a couple of MO websites that want to sell ya something, initials are B and L).

BTW. I won't take that bet on how little a person will actually need to buy to implement an upgrade from 10-speeds to 11-speeds because I'm sure that you are more-than-likely right!

  9. I can't wait for the new levers!! As bad as Sh****o is, I liked that I could get into an aero position on the hoods. My Centaur levers are great, but that added position will be fantastic.

I'm also curious how well the grooves on the hood will actually channel sweat away from your hands. Gloves have never been on my good list, but it can be risky climbing on the hoods in 90+ degrees.

  10. Lewis, that is an interesting point about the grooves on the new ergos. Wonder if anyone will post something about this when they first set them up.

  11. The Campagnolo web site says that the riders using 11-speed in Le Tour were riding Record 11. Does anyone know if anyone is currently using Super Record or when we might see it on a ProTour (ha) team's setup?

And, does anyone know if there are any interviews (I can read French or English) with riders that have used it and are able to give their first impressions. I know Campa is probably trying to keep everything quiet for now, but I'm way too excited for this.

  12. Great post and very informative. It has been very difficult getting information on the "intense groups", especially the new ergopower levers.

Am very interested to hear more from Peter especially re the internals of 09 Centaur and the comparison to 2007/8 Chorus.

I would love to upgrade to the 2009 Centaur shifters for the new hand position but not at the expense of shifting functionality or quality compared to my 2008 Chorus ergo's.

Details such as the number of upshifts and downshifts available, bearing or bushing internals and the actual internal engineering make up of this lever compared to the 10 speed Chorus are needed to see if I can justify the purchase just for the extra hand position.

Peter, please keep us informed with more details as you find them. Appreciate what you have given us already.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Thanks for the info.
Could an 11 speed chainring fit on an 10 speed crank? Would it still work on a 10 speed chainring? I assume that there is a different in the teeth width due to a narrower chain
    Keep us informed

The 11s chainring is the same width, the rings are just closer together. The 11s chainrings, both compact and standard, are the same bolt diameters as 10s.

The 11s chain will be fine on an otherwise 10s crank, just like 10s was OK on an 9s or even 8s crank(my first 10s upgrade was onto a 7400 DA 8s crank-worked fine). I'm pretty sure a 10s chain will work on a 11s RD, and vice versa, a 11s chain onto a 10s RD..altho a certain website/MO place will say no-(initials are BB)

  15. A bike shop told me today because Campag have gone from "Quickshift" to "Ultrashift" that I will need a new front mech if I want to change from 08 Chorus ergo's to 09 Centaur shifters.

    Can anyone clarify?

Put the new 2009 Veloce levers onto a demo Moots, with Record crank, FD, Chorus RD..levers work fine. Downshift(easier cog, bigger cog) is light, downshift like older Chorus/Record. left is multi adjustable so will work with any FD. Th action is so light, don't think there is a shift disc/shift g spring type mech in there. I'll wait until I get a parts blowup.

It is completely compatible, BTW-2007 RD and 2009 Veloce ERGO.

Nope. See my post. I put 2009 Veloce onto an otherwise Record/Chorus bike and the LH ergo is like the one you have, multi positional, ratcheting friction, will work with any FD/crank combo. Including QS, non-QS, shimano, sram, any FD.

Thanks for the confirmation regarding backward compatibility of the 2009 10-speed shifters with current derailleurs/etc. + your first impressions of the shifters after they have been mounted on a bike.

  19. Peter,

With the release of the 2009 centaur, what would your advice be? 2009 centaur or 2008 chorus? With some of the offers online they are pretty close price wise and by some of your impressions I understand that the 2009 Centaur has a lot of 2008 chorus .... And other cool stuff!

    Thanks for your wisdom!
