What about Andy?

For those of you who understand German, Andy interview this morning in Luxemburger Wort (summary in my previous post):

„Bis dato kann ich nicht klagen, auch wenn ich gestern (vorgestern) viel Zeit verloren habe. Bereits am Morgen fühlte ich mich nicht wirklich gut. Ich hoffte, dies würde sich nach und nach bessern, dem war aber nicht so. Außerdem habe ich dann in der Anfahrt zur Schlusssteigung nach Hautacam einen Fehler gemacht, der wohl auf meine Unerfahrenheit zurückzuführen ist. Ich habe die Etappe und das Tempo nämlich unterschätzt. Bei der rasanten Fahrt habe ich mich nicht richtig ernährt. Auf den letzten Kilometern war ich dann total mit meinen Kräften am Ende. Auf den letzten fünf km habe ich gegenüber den Schnellsten sicherlich 1' auf 1 000 m verloren. Ich hatte das Gefühl, einfach nicht mehr vorwärts zu kommen. Dies ist zwar ärgerlich, doch man sollte nicht vergessen, dass ich nie gesagt habe, ich könnte die Rundfahrt gewinnen. Mein Ziel war es stets in Paris anzukommen“, erklärte der 23-Jährige.

„Es kann noch viel passieren“

Den kommenden Tagen fiebert der Mondorfer trotz seiner knapp 9' Rückstand auf Cadel Evans (AUS/SIL) ungeduldig entgegen: „Meine persönliche Situation hat sich etwas geändert. Ich werde mich nun voll in den Dienst meiner beiden Kapitäne stellen. Warum sollte ich außerdem nicht einen Etappensieg anvisieren. Hierfür muss ich nicht bis in die Berge warten. Ich werde versuchen auf einem Abschnitt in die richtige Ausreißergruppe zu springen. Die Tour de France ist noch nicht zu Ende. Auf dem Weg nach Paris kann noch viel passieren.“

Yes it is his first Tour and has a lot to learn. Of course Jan Ullrich learnt all this at 17. Being pumped full of EPO compensates for food and the jour sans.

Brothers Shleck could go 1-2 in years to come. Both of them are amazing riders.

I had it totally wrong. I had Andy Schleck as my secret favourite this year, he totally blew it. I tried to find out what happened in Hautacam, here his story as combined from several sources in Luxembourg (TV, Luxembourgish speaking paper, French speaking paper):

"I didn't feel well already in the morning. In Tourmalet, I could still follow the best, but I made a huge mistake at the beginning of Hautacam. I hadn't thought the pace would be that strong (thanks Voigt, my comment :o) ). Then I didn't eat properly, and the last 5,000 metres were a nightmare. I must have lost 1' per km to the favourites.

I am learning. I am not worried, because I am only 23, and I want to come back later and win this. I am very happy for Frank. I feel very well, and I am in fantastic shape. I simply made a mistake in Hautacam. Now, I will totally work for the guys. Plus, I would like to win a stage. I will not necessarily wait for the Alps. With the CSC tactics, I might join a group of escaped riders in the following days."

"Frank is the anxious of the family, Andy is super cool. After a few days, he told me "baah, this just a race like any other race. Fist time Frank cam to Tour de France, he "vouvoyait" (to say "vous", French polite form towards other person) other riders."
