I agree. In all my years of using computer forums, I have never seen a
troll defeated by argument. Trolls don't care what people say to them as
long as they get a response of some kind. If people stop replying, a
troll always moves on in search of people who don't have the restraint
to ignore them.

I have seen them backed into corners which expose their agenda and

The man's a numpty, everybody knows everything he writes can be ignored. The
fact that he calls you a murderer demonstrates how stupid he is - by simply
ignoring it, you show far more contempt than you do by engaging him. The
latter demonstrates you believe he has some credibility - and I rather hope
you don't believe that.

My from address and reply address are both valid, and I check them about
once a fortnight. In that time I typically get about 30 spams to the
from address and < 10 to the reply address.

When I experimented with using an address on a domain that I had a
catchall for, after a month or two I found myself getting a few spams a
week to the catchall but nothing to the actual address.

If you're really worried about spam, it's not difficult to use a munged
address and put simple unmunging instructions in your signature.

No, I don't assume anything.

Whatever that other poster does or doesn't do, the fact is the same: use
a valid email address on usenet and you will increase your spam receipt
count. You might also provide others with the ability to abuse you
direct into your email inbox.

I use a real address, in fact it's one of the two accounts that I use
most for real email. A few years ago it would often receive more than
a hundred spam messages in a day, but only a few got past SpamPal. Now
I don't use SpamPal and it gets maybe one a day, because my ISP has
implemented proper filtering.
If you're not willing to use a working address in your posts you should
at least provide a munged one with instructions.
