Cable cycle lock

Did you try a hacksaw? I don't think bolt-croppers are very good at
cutting cables, they tend to just crush them. Cable cutters are
different.

There's some lock reviews here and they are pretty damning of cable
locks apart from some of those with armoured sheaths.

I'd love it if someone replies to your post with a great product, but
frankly I think cable locks are only good for when you want to pop
into a shop for a minute and are willing to risk it.

interesting and pretty good for the weight. Has anyone tried/got one and
feel able to comment?

I've actually had the back tyre of a road bike rub right through the
sheath of an oxford cable lock, so YMMV. I'm currently using a light
Abus one. (ABUS LOCK COIL PRIMO)

I've got the Abus Bordo 75. Weighs 900g-ish and comes with a holder that
fits onto bottle cage mounts. The lock rattles when the holder is attached
to the bike, but a bit of cloth or foam stuffed in the bottom sorts it out.

When locking through wheel and frame there is little room to get a tool
into, and the hinged design means there're no parallel sides to rest a
bottle jack on. That said, it is not nearly as tough as a decent D-lock,
but the compact size makes up for it.

Can be had for £38 including postage on ebay. Evans for £50 last time I
checked. Decathlon had some cheap last time I checked, but that was a few
months ago.

I've been using one of these for a year now. I wouldn't like to
comment on just how secure it is, but I heard one of the advantages
was that it's strong enough to discourage opportunists and unusual
enough to discourage pros, who generally go equipped to deal with the
normal range of D locks, cables etc. It's silver rated by the
insurance companies.

It's compact, easy to carry and you could probably fight off a bear
with it if you used it as a flail. Well, maybe.

Thanks all for your comments. It sounds like the Abus folding lock
would be a reasonable compromise, certainly better that the lock I ma
using now (more like cheese than siver rated.)
