Straight Pull Hubs

i've decided to buy marzzochi 55 ata forks, they're bolt through
quick release meaning i will need a new hub. simple? no i have mavic
wheels with strange flat spokes which are staight pull out of the hub
meaning a can't use average j-bend hub. i cant find any staight pull
hubs with 24 spoke holes if anyone has a clue what to do please help.

Probably need to get a different set of wheels to suit the forks. Tell
him to ask the vendor of the forks what they recommend for the
particular application.

I'd be inclined to change wheels. I assume they're Mavic Crosstrails or
similar? By the time you've laced in a new hub you're probably into the
same kind of money as a new whole wheel from the likes of Merlin.

a fork which is compatible with his existing wheel.

I'd be inclined to change wheels. I assume they're Mavic Crosstrails
or similar? By the time you've laced in a new hub you're probably
into the same kind of money as a new whole wheel from the likes of

go for a fork which is compatible with his existing wheel.
Before today I'd never heard of thru-hole hubs.

New big thing a few years ago. Supposed to add rigidity to the fork. Never
ridden a bike with them but my mate who's ridden many a different mountain
bike reckons there is a noticeable difference in how the bike feels / rides.

Avoids the "can disk brake reaction forces ever eject a wheel with the
quick release done up properly" debate too, AIUI.

If we're talking about 20mm axled forks, yes, the wheel definitely tracks
better with one of those. Also no potential for disk brake/QR problems.

(and yes, new wheel, don't mess about trying to re-hub an existing one).

He's going to need a new front wheel and if he likes Mavic, then they
make the Crossmax ST which can come with a 20mm front hub. Plus, if
he's looking to run a marzocchi 55 then I'm guessing he likes to ride
rough terrain and therefore he needs to use a wheel with more than 24
spokes.

And there are 24 and 25mm axles around too (24 on Maverick forks, 25 IIRC on
another invert fork.)

Dunno about how good they are, or whether they're worth it, for a
mountain bike, but many motorcycle trials bikes use strait laced
spokes/hubs. I assume they _do_ add something for the heavier weight
of a motorbike or they'd stop using them, but have my doubts for mtb.
