Unicycle tool thread...

I use my fancy all-in-one QU-AX toolkit.

Except my pedal wrench got stolen out of it at F.L.U.C.K. 🙁

I do all my uni tooling. Pedal wrench, socket wrench, hex set, spoke
wrench and patch kit... that all you need. Flat head and hammer come in
handy now and again.

..oh and pipe cutter.

Edit: I guess I wouldn't get to far without a tire pump.

I have most of the necessary tools at home, except a spoke wrench. But
if the need arises, i'll just steal my friend's wrench, so I'm not too
concerned about that. I like just tinkering around with stuff when I'm
bored, so tools come in handy. Just recently I put a water bottle
holder on my coker for example. I like the feeling of being able to
revive my uni after a mishap. I would probably die if I had to take it
to a bike shop and leave it there for awhile. They get lonely you
know... 😉

I have all the tools but sometimes if I'm out on a ride and I forgot to
bring something (one in three rides probably) I end up swinging by a
bike shop. There are a couple bike shops that are either cool with me
using their stuff or that will do it for me cause they are nice.

There is one bike shop that tried to charge me to use their hex tool
for my crank and I couldn't believe it.

The only repairs I actualy am willing to pay money for are to do with
spokes. If my wheel is really out of true or I don't have time to fix
it myself then I take it to my bike shop, they also build all my
wheels. Go Phat Moose! They are really cool there, sometimes I even
just go in there to use their tools and stands and stuff.

Oh yeah, I don't do much more to spokes then tweaking/trueing if it gets
a little crooked (which is practically never. My rims never change.)

I recently had them lace up a new rim though, because I was upgrading
to a newer model.

longer. BIke shops rarely have a clue what to do with a unicycle

here's the tools i usually carry with me, i have way too many, and i
have various other park tools that never come out onto the trail with
me. usually i'll only carry one tool, and a pump, maybe also my flat
wrench for the pedals.
the park mt-1 is probably my favorite, cause i can carry it all day,
and forget about it until i need it. sometimes the shape makes it
challenging to use 🙂

Usually, I use my own tools. I have an 8mm crank bolt wrench,
schrader/presta hand pump, ISIS crank puller, spare tube, tire levers,
6mm hex for seatpost clamp bolts, bent UDC pedal wrench, and a
scredriver-mounted socket from my set for the saddle nuts, spoke
wrench, and Park bike lube.

All of these come with me on every ride of any length.

Initially, I didn't have any of my tools. When I had a problem, I took
it to my LBS, watched them fix it, then bought the tools to fix it
myself in the future 🙂

How antiquated. We in the SARs just take JC on all of our rides. Once he
forgot to bring his stick welder but it didn't cause too much
inconvenience.

You mean he hasn't told you how to rig a 'Wimshurst electrostatic
machine' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimshurst_machine) using a
unicycle wheel, a fast-food wrapper and a coat hanger?

I was able to repair a broken axle with one of these setups.

On a dump truck.

While gliding.

The influence machines and their successors are too complicated for our
ride needs. We don't always have a dump truck handy either although for
your application it is clearly superfluous. In a pinch, we use
Blackwood's Coker wheel which spins by far the fastest. The stick used
for weld fill is simply heated by friction as Tom spins it up. The
stick itself is hot enough to initiate substrate melt in the broken
part. In fact we have to be careful not to let it burst into flames
which is the most difficult part. Carrying an adequate supply of inert
shield gas is just impractical.

I got one of those little qu-ax, mobile phone styled emergency tool kits
and it's great! (http://tinyurl.com/4qgg7b)

Although it says it's just for emergencies I use it all the time for
cheeky wee tightens here and there. Only problem is it doesn't have an
8mm allan key, so still need to carry one of those with me.

have the tool i need for most jobs, allen keys, spanners, hack saws,
hammers, crowbars (yet to find a unicycle related use for that though)
and a spare tube (run out of patches, but cant use tham properly
anyway). tool wise i am almost fine, my shed is full or random stuff,
but i do need a crank extractor for my koxx though, and a spoke wrench.
but i havent noticed anything wrong with my wheel yet.
oh and here is my new "home made" toy it isnt finished though🙁
