easier said than done i know. just having returned a few hours ago from my first crit of the season, reflecting on the events, i was thinking about how i "read" the race. IOW, what shoudl i have recognized differently to have done better, and some thoughts came about.
This is how it went down. Cat 3 crit...45 mins. I'm nervous as hell leading up to it b/c the course has such an unpredictable history. Half the races i've done there (10 or so) have ended with breaks, and half bunch sprints...so it can go either way. I think that's unusual for a cat 3 race, but anyway i digress.
the race gets' underway and my nerves calm, and after a flurry of what felt like half-hearted attacks which were covered by one particular team i settled in thinking "let them do the work, but stay near the front so if something looks strong i can go with it". I fit the all-arounder category i think on the Coggan power profile (5 sec upper VG, 1 min UT, 5 min G, FTP upper G) so i race "opportunistically". the race comes to the last 3 laps and i'm really comfortable, almost counting on a top 10 finish based on how everyone else looks, but still being inwardly vigilante. I see a guy from the team that had been setting tempo come up to the front and sit 3rd wheel on his guys. I'm thinking " this is there sprinter, he's lining up...follow him when he goes"
Needless to say, bell lap comes, its gettin' crazy but i'm comfortable, sitting 5th wheel or so, right near this guy. last corner comes im ready for the sprint and i take it wide with him. He blows up, I end up having to sprint around the guy into the wind, while a crazy move goes up the inside with guys who looked weak all race. they get the podium, i get 11th. No bigee since it's the first race, etc but i have a knack for finishing 11th-15th whether it's P123 or straight cat 3 races. Frustrating as hell cuz' i'm usually strong enough to be there for the end, but like today, i have a weird way of always reading the race incorrectly. So little means so much. For those who have the gift for seizing the right move on the sprint, how do you do it?
One problem that is recurrent that i do notice: turnover of players. IOW, i'm always racing against a different set of guys each weekend it seems and second: no consistent teammates, so i'm always having to look out for myself. this combo means i waste alot of time going with breaks that go nowhere, and never know who is doing what behind me.
any thoughts appreciated.
