Last year was my first TT season and since the end of Sep 07 I have put in 3000 miles of training, even on Xmas day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day - the lot. In the same TT last year I came in over six minutes behind the winner, this year it was 2-45. I think if I hadn't seen any improvement I'd have chucked it in altogether!
For people who are interested in this sort of thing, John Savage and Carl Dickinson are training for triathlons, both are in the top 10 runners for East Hull Harriers and knock out 10 mile runs in an hour which I could never do, so transferring their running form over to cycling doesn't seem to be a straight crossover.

Is there something better to be doing on those days?

You don't have to go faster as long as you still enjoy it. After a while you'll pass your peak, but that doesn't mean it's time to stop.

You wouldn't expect a sprinter to be good at marathons, and cycling doesn't even involve running. :-)

I had to go to work on those days, so there was no choice :-)

Impressive improvement! How did you find it? Did you feel faster? More in control?
Now just aim for the fastman's 'evens' - 25mph/24mins.... :-)

I shouldn't be too far off that on a flat course hopefully - fingers crossed. The one last week was hilly for the first 5 miles and I'm too scared on the downhill bit to get much advantage on the way back.
I think the biggest thing is not having a lay off during the winter and getting 130 miles a week in on the real roads with the headwinds and rain.
In the same event last week a guy who used to ride that course a minute faster than me last year has not put in the work and now he is 2 minutes behind me.
Two days ago we had a 5 mile one way TT, he was my minute man and I caught him on the line.

Immensely satisfying when you have a yardstick like that. Well done!

As a runner and occasional cyclist - commute, gentle rides into the north downs etc., who is this week in Mallorca cycling I'd say running fitness doesn't automatically transfer at all to riding. It helps of course, but it's not simple.
I still get to watch my girlfriend disappear as she decides she really wants to close that gap to the 4 guys who just swept passed and I get to watch my heart rate out as she disappears the fact I was only just hanging on to the wheel before is pretty depressing.
Of course she'd beat me at running too, but I'd be a lot closer there. I'm pretty sure though once the guys have more experience in the saddle their fitness will tell - it's what I'm telling myself at any rate.
