Elgin (IL) Approves Preliminary Bikeway Plan

Here's an idea for your bright leaders in IL--- Don't call or declare
any route "safe" . Here in NJ using bike routes often requires using
roads to get to the next trail segment. If someone gets hit they
arent likely to get anything from the state as they assumed a certain
risk by cycling on the street. Lockers and such are a great idea
though!!!!

plan, which apparently includes a lot of the suggestions from that workshop
(I missed the meeting, so I don't have the exact details in front of me).
The council approved it unanimously, but not before the liability boogeyman
was brought up again (thanks, Illinois Supreme Court!).

The "liability boogeyman" Kristian mentioned (with an appropriately
sarcastic nod of thanks to the IL Supreme Court) has little to do with
a cyclist being struck by traffic and everything to do with roadway
maintenance and design. Google "Boub VS Wayne Township".

Elgin is a economically depressed river town. Please don't pick on them,
when they are down. The outlying areas of Elgin are upscale, but downtown
Elgin has seen better times, by anyone's standards.

It has, but that casino has helped quite a bit.

The big draw for biking in Elgin is the Fox River Trail (with connection to
the Illinois Prairie Path), so a big focus of any plan is to connect the
neighborhoods with it. However, as the city continues to sprawl west at an
astounding rate, linking the new neighborhoods with each other and the older
parts of town by something other than an overcrowded US-20 is a major driver
as well.

I think the Boub liability concerns will fade away in the end, just as they
have in Chicago and Schaumburg.

His opponent was Alan Keyes -- we'd have been idiots *NOT* to vote for Obama,
whatever his faults.

I miss Peter Fitzgerald, and no one confuses me with a Republican. It was
just so nice to watch him tweak the state party establishment over and over
again.
