VIN SUPRYNOWICZ: Is partial reversal of autism possible?

New medical findings indicate many children have a genetic ability to excrete the toxic mercury
present as a preservative in many childhood shots -- more and more of which are recommended,
    each year.

But children who become autistic -- or who show lesser signs of heavy metal poisoning, such as
attention deficit disorder -- "are the ones that cannot detoxify," according to Laura Bono of North
Carolina, the housewife and mom who founded the Right to Fight Mercury Damage Campaign.

The Bono family pediatrician had noted in his charts that by age 16 months "Jackson has 25 words,
making good progress," Laura Bono says. "And then it starts to regress within days after the shot,
and within two years he's gone. A child who never needed antibiotics, never threw up, suddenly after
August 1990 he's having all these weird rashes, it was a mercury rash. ...

"But there was nothing in the literature that autism was anything but mental. It was 1995 before
this went from being (categorized as) a mental to a medical/metabolic problem, that they have all
sorts of immune deficiencies, we kept saying, `But he's so allergic to everything ... '

The good news in finding the apparent cause of autism, of course, is that if the ailment is
caused by the presence of toxic mercury, some partial reversal may be achieved if the mercury can
    be removed.

"Some of them were able to detoxify, and some not," Laura Bono says. "It's not black and white. How
many have attention deficit disorder or other problems, where autism is just those syndromes to the
tenth power? We see so many allergies in society now, and these things all link back to problems
with the immune system, so it can be hypothesized that these children ended up with autism, but
there are other spectrum disorders and (their rates) are also exploding, children who are just
partially neurologically affected -- either they got less thimerosal or they were able to detoxify
    it better. ...

"My son is 14, and we've been chelating for three years, and the more we get out the more my son
comes back. Dr. Stephanie Cave in Baton Rouge, Louisiana," (author of "What Your Doctor May Not Tell
You About Vaccination"😉 "has been doing this the longest, and she says, 'If I can get them from the
time they're five, I can turn them around, they're nothing like they were if we can catch them
    early.' ...

"Go watch (Rep.) Dan Burton's hearings. He went crazy over this. He said, `You know this is a
horrible thing that you're putting in vaccines,' and they won't tell him how many doses were
delivered by January 2001 that are still out there that could have an expiration date as late as May
    2004. ..."

"(Dr. and U.S. Sen.) Bill Frist argues, 'These poor vaccine manufacturers, they're going to be
bankrupted.' Yet, you know what? Vaccines have to be making a lot of money; there are over 400 new
vaccines in the pipeline. ... Let's say we do bankrupt them. There are so many others ready to step
in. If Firestone Tires goes bankrupt they reorganize and they learn their lessons. ...

"The government paid people $50,000 apiece who were debilitated by the swine flu vaccine, thousands
of them. It wasn't the pharmaceutical firms that paid, it was the taxpayers. So where's the
financial incentive to improve the vaccines? ...

"It is going to cost the taxpayers so much money what they have done, the mass poisoning of
thousands of children with this thimerosal."

Replies Eli Lilly spokesman Ed Sagebiel: "We recognize autism is a devastating disease, but the
trial lawyers are not going to find the possible cure for autism. ... (We need to) continue to let
the science guide this, rather than the trial attorneys. In the current debate around thimerosal and
autism, the scientific evidence just does not show a relationship between the two.

"A study at the University of Rochester School of Medicine found ethyl mercury has a half life in
the blood of seven days, versus methyl mercury which has a half life of 45 days. This would suggest
that ethyl mercury does not persist in the body ...

"You have the National Institutes of Health, you have the Academy of Pediatrics, if you go to the
Centers for Disease Control Web site you'll find their statement as well; you just cannot find any
scientifically credible organization confirming that type of link," the Eli Lilly spokesman
    concludes.

In 1990, the recorded rate of autism in America was 1 in 10,000. Today the Centers for Disease
Control report that number stands at 1 in 150. This dramatic rise in autism rates correlates with
the increase in mercury-exposure through vaccines given to children in the late 1980s and through
the 1990s -- especially after a vaccine against hepatitis B was added to the standard formulations,
    Laura Bono says.

    ...

Well, that shows that there are folks who really need to go after the nefarious opportunists who are
pumping kids full of chemicals in the scam that chelating will cure autism -- these are scum from
the mud at the bottom of the River Styx that pry money from parents of disabled kids.

Obviously Mr. Suprynowicz has a little problem finding "facts" that go against his politics: "Vin
Suprynowicz, a nationally syndicated Libertarian columnist and author, explores questions on
constitutional freedoms in his Sunday column."

Is it a constitutional freedom to scare parents of disabled kids into unproven and possibly harmful
    "treatments"?

By the way -- there are good therapies for autistic kids. There are many dedicated
occupational/physical therapists, speech therapists and teachers that work with these kids everyday.
Paying a therapist their $80/hour fee per week goes much further than the $3000 and up for chelation
in the treatment of PDD, hyperlexia, Aspergers, and all the other symdromes that fall under the
    autism spectrum.

Doubtful. And I see no reason to assume it, based on your unsupported word. Why are vaccines "the
best theory" and what other theories have you bothered to look into?

    1) It is essentially certain that mercury in vaccines is not the
cause of autism. The Danish data alone demonstrate it.

    2) Children are at particular risk for some diseases and thus
vaccination is especially important for those.

You also did not seem to pick up on the autism spectrum... next time be very specific on WHAT type
of autism you are referring to. There are several types... and they cannot all be from the same
cause --- and there are several that were not even diagnosed 20 years ago because then the kids were
just thought to be strange (and I know a few, one is an astronomer and several are computer

Here's a test: one child several years ago in a special ed. preschool which included several
autistic kids was diagnosed with "Fragile X" --- was that caused by vaccines too?

But why should facts get in the way of the lucrative business of baseless lawsuits and
    chelation clinics?

No one should have the right to treat a child with chelation for autism. It is criminal to subject a
child to the nasty things it does to them (reports on a listserv I am on state that it makes the

We weren't vaccinating 13 yrs ago?

Autism awareness (particularly Aspergers) is the contributory factor in the higher rates......quite
simply............people were being incorrectly diagnosed for many years. In the 4 years or so, that
I have become acquainted with adults dx'd ASD, I have met (online and off), only one that hadn't
previously been given some other explanation (diagnosis) for their behaviours.

I disagree. There is only *one* autism. Autism is autism is autism. It is a spectrum with some more
    severely affected than others.

Many European countries such as Belgium are now "swinging" to this view and diagnose only Autistic
Spectrum Disorder, whereas previously they may have dx'd Aspergers, HFA, or LFA along with co-morbid
disorders such as OCD. There is only degrees of autism (IMHO) . On some days my son is high
    functioning, on others, low functioning.

I also believe that there are many many more adults who fulfill the criteria and are unable to

"professionals" are blinded by "contributory factors" ie they tend to stick to "safe mode" when

And if it is a low functioning non-verbal autistic, how would they know this? As I said, there are
those who have claimed that their child has benefited from chelation.

Not me. Never! But I wouldn't deny anyone (with little or no hope for those they love), the chance
to try *anything*.......and here we could get into a long debate on the rights of carers and the
rights of the child, but I won't go there :-)

You also did not seem to pick up on the autism spectrum... next time be very specific on WHAT
type of autism you are referring to. There are several types... and they cannot all be from the
same cause --- and there are several that were not even diagnosed 20 years ago because then the
kids were just thought to be strange (and I know a few, one is an astronomer and several are
    computer specialists).

I disagree. There is only *one* autism. Autism is autism is autism. It is a spectrum with some
    more severely affected than others.

Many European countries such as Belgium are now "swinging" to this view and diagnose only Autistic
Spectrum Disorder, whereas previously they may have dx'd Aspergers, HFA, or LFA along with co-
morbid disorders such as OCD. There is only degrees of autism (IMHO) . On some days my son is high
    functioning, on others, low functioning.

.. Okay, that is fair... but I will agree to amicably disagree. My son has a speech/language
disorder and is NOT autistic --- but he has been in educational situations with many kids that have
autistic characteristics who may or may not be autistic, such as the child with Fragile X and
another with LKS (Landau Kleffner Syndrome, a seizure disorder).

I'm still not sold on the validity of chelation for kids.

Again, I disagree. Although *I* remain sceptical, there are carers (very few) who have posted on
alt.support.autism who testify to their autistic children being more communicative and less self-
    harming after chelation.

My gut feeling is that the child may be simply responding to very negative feelings about the
treatment and viewing it as a punishment that they do not want to go through again.

IME. I doubt it. The low functioning autistics that I know of, appear not to be able to reason in
this way, but it could be a possibility in those LF's who have more ability to reason.

Exactly! AC's (Autistics and Cousins), often have co-morbid disorders. The danger is that those
conditions may either "blanket" autism, or autism may "blanket" them.

My son was initially dx'd "Aspergers disorder and borderline intellectually impaired"......Is that
intellectual disability a result of ASD or a separate problem? The majority of those dx'd Aspergers
are average to above average intelligence. My son has since had his dx modified to "ASD with
    underlying intellectual difficulties".

At the risk of boring the [censored] off some of you, but in the hope that some *may* be interested I
shall illustrate what I consider a *major* failing in the dx process. The diagnostic process
involves the children taking an IQ test that is also used for testing NT's (Neuro Typicals). The
fact that Jake (my son) doesn't think and reason as an NT immediately puts him at a disadvantage and
consequently results in his low score (a couple of points less and he would have benn classified as
    intellectually impaired).

Now this is a child who could tell the time at 3 yr old, was singing the full lyrics to songs (he
has to like them 🙂 after only one listening, and who can pull a CD from a collection of 800 when I
give him a lyric line of a song on one of them. He only has to travel a route once (even up to 80
km) and despite the twists and turns, will remember that route exactly. We once travelled a 40 km
route with *many* turns when he was only 4 and recently (6 yrs later) we travelled that same route
for only the 2nd time and he related the whole route to us. Splinter skills that should be exploited
(but how?), but are often ignored (by professionals) to focus on "failings from the norm"

His life is totally ordered (self imposed) and he has very few behavioural problems other than
his sensitivity to certain sensory input. In most respects he is far happier that the other kids
in my household (I foster), is more capable of showing love and affection, and is happy with his
    own company.

Now this "being with self" is where things go awry. The school, The Child Development Unit, The
"system", all think that it's a major problem. Why? He's happy! Isn't that *all* that we can ask
    for our kids?

That was a good rant... and I remember there were a couple of kids in my son's preschool who were
much like that. Though one had this impulsive need to climb trees (he was also the one who wandered
around my son's fifth birthday party singing the Beatrix Potter song that we had on in the

    impaired kids).

Anyway, the listserv I hang around on has message board that I look on occasionally --- it is a more
of a symptom of several underlying conditions. Many of the kids have autism, some have seizure
disabilities, some have cerebral palsy, some have a family history and there are even a couple who
were born with a physical and detectible abnormality in their brain. It gives kind of an education
when you read about these kids on the complexity of neurology (I actually had an assistent at the

Yup. I know the type. We all sat down to watch Sleeping Beauty last night (the "slightly Gothic"
version with Miranda Richardson). Jake stayed in the kitchen pacing backwards and forwards, stimming
with a wet wipe and refused to watch. He was (he told me later) "listening very hard to tell us
where they had changed the real story". I figure that his auditory input would have been imapired by
"interference" from visual input so he had chose not to watch in order to fully focus on the sound.
He can "switch off" like this in the middle of a crowded room but I consider myself lucky that he
    can at least *enter* a crowded room.....many AC's can't :-(

Me neither. When I try to explain Jake's problems to others I say that it is akin to throwing the
light switch in the lounge and have the bathroom fan come on.

The neuropsych (who is wonderful with him) talks of "the hard wiring in the loft having been wired
up wrong (for whatever reason). I tend to think of it more as a leak in the tiles, which on certain
days drips on different pieces of the hard wiring......when I throw that light switch in the lounge,
on rare occasions, I am surprised in that I don't hear the bathroom fan but the fish tank lights go
out, or the burglar alarm goes off. On most occasions the power is predictable, but when it's
