Diabetes on the rise in India

Mangalore - Diabetes is one of the chronic syndromes which causes multi-system disorder and it is
increasing. Unless and until it was detected and prevented by timely treatment, it might cause
multiple complications, said Dr Devdas Rai, eminent physician and Aryabhata Award winner here on
Wednesday.
He was delivering his key note address on 'Diabetes Mellitus and its Varied Manifestations' at a
seminar organised by Family Doctors Association (FDA), Mangalore as a part of their Continuing
Medical Education (CME) held at Mallikatta Neuro Centre here.
He further observed that 14 per cent of the Indian population was diabetic. He warned that according
to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, India would be the Diabetic Capital of the World in the
near future and unless it was prevented and cured it would continue to be a major health problem.
Chief guest Dr N Shankar, neuro physician and associate professor KMC, Mangalore, said that main
cause of diabetes was insulin deficiency, heredity, stress and strain.
The symptoms are Polyurea, Polydypsia, Impotence, blurring of vision, loss of weight, kidney
failure. He suggested prevention by monitoring blood glucose, timely medication, balanced diet and
regular physical exercise.
Noted ophthalmologist Dr Vijay Pai in his informative lecture said that diabetes was one of the main
causes for deterioration of vision and might cause total loss of vision if not controlled.
Dr Anupama Suresh, gynaecologist, spoke on Gestational Diabetes which affects the foetus and
complicates pregnancy. Therefore, she said, diabetic women were advised to avoid future pregnancies.
Dr Bharathraj, pediatrician, said that diabetes was rarely found in children and if so it was due to
environmental factors. Dr Devidas Shetty, surgeon, spoke on the advanced stage of diabetes and
treatment of diabetic foot with audio-visual programme.
Dr Mohandas Bhandary, founder president FDA, in his presidential address said that diabetes might be
controlled by balanced diet, regular physical exercise and stress-free life style.
This was followed by panel discussion and interaction with the participants. Earlier, Dr M A R Kudva
welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest speakers and later Dr Rajshekar Hangarki proposed a
vote of thanks. A large number of doctors were present on this occasion.
