in early March, which I imagine will be near Boston. It would be nice to
arrange a memorial ride in connection with that. It would be an
appropriate tribute to Sheldon.

Now if only I could decide whether to ride an English bike or a French one.

If it happens I'll be there on a 1960's Rudge fixie (might have to
flop to freewheel side depending on ride pace and distance, but I
doubt it).

Well I guess I should have quoted to show this but my interest was in
the fact that "other cities" (with craigslists) besides Austin
(TIOOYK, or so we forgetfully think) are having rides. Thursday was
picked for a reason?

Also here on the Texas, Austin c-list, someone posted the close-up of
Sheldon with his "Eagle Helmet" on.

Sheldon had a collection of 70's Raleighs in the shop (GS, Comp,Int,
Pro, IIRC). Ride one of those models.

FWIW: I rode across the Columbia River Sunday with a bearded guy
riding a recumbent trike. I keep thinking back and trying to remember

His kids should be getting their spring breaks around mid-March. It
might be nice if they were able to witness a massive memorial ride in
their home town.

This Friday is the regular MC3 ride in Vancouver, B.C. I've called
it as a Sheldon Tribute Ride and encouraged people to wear a panache
on their helmets or a goofy, stylish, practical favourite hat.

We'll drink wheat beer and French wine. Maybe we'll sing a few
traditional and modern chantries or Gilbert & Sullivan tunes.
There will be a prize for the best beard or Heinlein quote or person
who takes themselves least seriously.

Given the weather forecast we might make two dozen hard-cores but
more wouldn't be too surprising.

When I sabre my Champagne on this and future Bastille Days, I'll also
be celebrating Sheldon's birthday with a toast and a ride.

If I had one of those, I guess I could. My choices are limited to what I
own. In the English and French makes, that would be:

1) A 1986 Dawes Galaxy, with 9-speed SIS drivetrain and other upgrades
2) A 1973 Motobecane Mirage (too small for me, really, but a sweet bike)
3) A 1978 Motobecane Mirage (just need to build the wheels for this one)
4) A 1980 Peugeot UO10

Those are the ones that are working (or almost). Sheldon's information
and advise was indispensable to me in working on all of them. I also
have a bunch of English and French bikes that are not in ridable
condition, and a bunch of bikes that aren't English or French, some of
them ridable, some not.

I enjoy working on them, largely because the knowledge and advise I got
from Sheldon makes it more of a joy than a chore.

That seems a fitting honour. The best Bourbon I ever tasted came out
of a Mason jar smuggled from Kentucky.

Today I tried a wheat beer for the first time. I'm not a big Gilbert
and Sullivan fan either. I wonder how he'd feel about an oat stout
instead?

The French wine I selected for the ride is naturally enough named,
"Red Bicyclette".

It's a 2004 Syrah. Not bad for having a snack while watching a crit
but for six-days I'd prefer the organic Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon.
(Cono Sur, 2006) It's got a riderless bike on the label..

They're both tasty and in the $15 - $20 range.

I think his family will be slightly overwhelmed by the number of
lives he's touched. When I broke the sad news at the bike shop you
could hear the jaws drop, and then the anecdotes started.

I'm extremely glad we aren't discussing ghost bikes, fading flowers
and wrist slaps for a scud jockey taking one we loved.
