My lovely wife has offered to buy a trainer for me for Christmas. Since I can't stand to run on a treadmill because of boredom, I can't help but think I'll be bored on a "regular" trainer.
Hence my thoughts turn to the VR trainers. Anyone have a peference with good justification? I am looking to spend ~$700 - 800.
No preference but it does relieve boredom, but so does training in front of the TV with a good movie going. You definintely need headphones to hear the dialog though. You could try rollers. With rollers, if you get bored, you get hurt:eek:. It definitely takes a lot of concentration not to ride off of them, so you probably shouldn't be watching TV or VR. But its great incentive to learn to concentrate on your riding basics such as cadence, spinning instead of pumping, riding position, etc.
I'm using the Tacx Sirius. Very safe (you won't fall off when losing concentration while spinning away), idiot proof, reliable and very inexpensive (around 200 USD). Recommended!
What I like best on it, you are spinning on your every day race bike so you keep in touch with handling practice on your bike.

All input is appreciated.

Rollers and SO many say ya fall off these all the time but if you have any kind of balance, you really don't. I have been riding rollers since the late 80s and I haven't 'fallen off' since the first couple of times I tried them. Makes you pedal more in circles, trains you to ride straight, simple, makes the time pass more quickly.
Can't help you with a VR trainer, but I'm thinking that even with one of those, motivation will still be a problem. You will still have to ride indoors where you will get bored and overheated.
I have a regular fluid trainer - it costs much less than the amount you mentioned, and does everything I need it to do. I have a big fan, the TV on with the sound turned down, and rock music going in the background to keep me occupied. It's still tough though.
You might be able to get everything you want for much less money.
