spray mace into the face of somebody who'd stopped their car and
rolled down the window?

You're referring to a case in Franconia Notch, NH. Let me say first
that there was no excuse for the cop shooting. However, the reason it
happened is that the cop and the guy who shot him had a long history
of problems. The cop was known locally (in a tiny town of about 1600
people) of being an arrogant bully from behind his badge. I saw one
local citizen report that she saw someone maced for having an expired
inspection sticker. That was just one case, there were apparently
many. His captain refused to restrain him despite many local reports
and complaints. He was a first class a-hole. He'd been on the guy who
shot him's case for several years - even having broken his jaw once at
a party he busted. He harassed a lot of people.

Whether he finally drove the shooter over the edge to madness with his
"walk up and mace him" technique no one will ever know. But, it's
somewhat irrelevant: moments after the cop was gunned down, another
motorist picked up the cop's gun and killed the cop killer. But, the
case is very controversial with multiple coverups going on and some
serious issues with the second gunman's story.

There was a bill filed in the state legislature to name a stretch of
highway after the cop but there was so much protest from the people in
town where he served (incredible as it seems) that they very recently
defeated the bill. Aside from some fellow officers and the cops
family, the cop was a hated man. No doubt he would have had no problem
with macing a bicyclist - he'd have done it too.

This is the first I've heard of that but it must have been pepper spray.

I've been maced in the face; driver would be vomiting and likely unable
to grasp a weapon.

I suspect that not all Macees are created equal.

Certainly I'd be totally helpless. In fact, I managed to get
some Scoville 3500 hot sauce in my eyes the other day and it
pretty much disabled me.

But conventional wisdom seems tb that mace if fine for disabling
normal people who aren't intoxicated - but it's not always
effective on people who are "craze" or "on drugs".

Also, some athletic endeavors depend heavily on the ability to
function in spite of pain. Boxing, in particular. I wouldn't
want to be the one who Maced an experienced boxer who had it in
for me.

"OC ...similar to pepper spray" I thought so. Mace is serious stuff.

In a women's self-defense class an ex attended, the instructor said not
to use pepper spray against humans as it doesn't disable but can tick
him off. Seems the case here.

Not for the squeamish.

Here's the rough scenario, according to transcripts and witness
testimony.

- cop pulls over driver
- driver sees that it's the cop with a vendetta, asks for another
officer.
- cop refuses. driver pulls away.
- cop catches up with driver.
- driver signals that he wants to drive ahead, apparently to his
uncles house where there are witnesses
- cop refuses to move. driver backs up.
- cop drives ahead, crashes into front of vehicle twice and pushes it
back 50 feet
- cop gets out, walks up and sprays driver with OC
- driver pulls gun and shoots cop as he walks away

What happens after that is the more controversial part - the witness
in the pick up truck you can see at the end picks up the cop's gun and
shoots the driver four times.

Pepper spray and chemical mace are entirely different.
Pepper spray is capsicum. Chemical mace is chloroacetophenone.
