Ti self extracting ISIS bolts?

  1. Anyone have a source, I removed the ones from my Profile crank and there heavy as hell!

    FSA has M15 aluminum cranks bolts that are super light weight. I use them with my Carbon Pro Team Issue cranks and Platinum Pro ISIS BB without problems. I think the FSA alloy bolts should fit all ISIS crank/bb.

    I got my FSA crank bolts from my LBS. The part number for the self-extracting 7075/T6 alloy M15 crank bolts (22 grams) is QR-2A. The part number for chromoly M15 crank bolts (51 grams) is QR-2S. I'm not sure where to buy them online.

  5. If you use the FSA crank bolts that are aluminum make sure you install the cranks with steel bolts then take them out and install the aluminum bolts. Aluminum and Ti bolts should not be used to install cranks, They will break. Hope this helps.

  8. Might also check Specialty Racing Products (www.srp-usa.com), they have all sorts of titanium bolts for cycling use.

  9. Actually, the reason not to us Ti crank bolts isn't that they'll break--I have a set that I've used for a couple of decades, and they've held up as well as a regular set of steel bolts.

    But there are two problems with Ti crank bolts. Ti generates extreme friction when threaded into steel axles, (it binds at high torque) and cannot be tightened down nearly as tightly as steel bolts. So they loosen much more (and more often) than do steel bolts.

    Ti crank bolts in Ti axles are simply unusable--the friction and binding is much more extreme than it is with a steel axle, if you succeed in sufficiently tightening the bolt, it will be hard to get the thing out etc.

    Of course, if you're a light rider and can get away with aluminum crank bolts, being able to really torque down your crank bolts may not be necessary--and ti bolts would be fine. But they are heavier than aluminum bolts.

  10. People have been using Ti bolts in Ti BB spindles for a long time. You can break them trying to install cranks. Ti is a flexy material and it stetches. A ti bolt holding a crank on that has been installed with a steel bolt should not fail. I have been installing them for many years and have never had a complaint or problem. Make sure that you use grease on the Ti bolt because Ti prep is not a very good lubricant.

    Ti prep has a grease base.

  12. Ti prep is not as good a lubricant as a good grease. It works well on stuff that is pressed in, on threads that are not under the tension of a crank fixing bolt

    Worked perfectly on all the threaded Ti stuff I ever used it on. And, FWIW, it is supposed to be used on THREADED Ti parts.

    When purchasing sight-unseen as with mail-order places, make sure to specify that the bolts have the M15 eched on them. A friend of mine bought M15 bolts online but also got M14s instead! FSA has self-extracting crank bolts but their lightest bolts are the non-self-extracting ones (see photo). I've had no problems with mine. Just make sure to mount the crankset on the BB with "regular" bolts before using the aluminum bolts and torquing it to the correct specs.

    Why not order the correct M15 bolts from your LBS? That way, there's a better chance you'll get the right ones.

    I noticed your post re. FSA C.P.T. cranks & platinum/TI BB and, since I'm on the verge of getting myself a similar setup, I was wondering how happy you've been with the combination? Performance? Reliability? I've heard mutterings about "imminent creaking", but don't know how reliable they are.

    Good to hear from a fellow TOian. I haven't heard anything regarding the "imminent creaking" you mentioned. My own experience with the FSA carbon crankset/Platinum Ti BB/Al crank bolts have been good, no problems at all. This "creaking" may be dependent on the rider's weight, style of riding, terrain, etc.. For reference, I weight 160lbs and typically ride 400kms per week on rolling or flat terrain.

    My FSA Platinum Pro Ti BB is as smooth as ever and I wouldn't hesitate to equip my other bikes with one (cost is the limiting factor). Check out reviews of the Platinum Pro BB at www.roadbikereviews.com.

    Thanks T72. Yeah, I checked w/rbr.com but few people have contributed their thoughts. Well, I just bought the crank/bb combo and will make a point of posting my opinion. My initial (existing?) concern is that FSA doesn't have the technical experience of a Campy, whose crank/bb I am presently using - and very much enjoying.

    I guess a valid argument can be made that all high-end components will deliver decent perfomance and reliability at a minimum, or that bearing technology is widely accessible. So, my concerns are probably without cause.

    One last thing re. the BB: Any maintenace issues / suggestions? Or has it been pretty much worry free?
