My contents insurance is with CIS and the surcharge for bikes is very low. Problem is that CIS still
uses real people who insist on visiting. It's not very easy persuading them to do things over the
phone, even!

CTC Cyclecover insure mine, worth a Several of thousands in all. I don't know if you have to be a
member (but it's never a bad idea anyway).

We use: theaa.comtheaa.comOpen ↗ for our household insurance which covers unspecified bikes up to a
certain value and specified bikes for >£1k value each for a small additional premium. They required
receipts or bike shop valuations for the specified bikes.

Marks and Spence home insurance. Anything below £4K is covered without having to be named, including
bikes. Cover extends to home, garage, shed etc and no clauses about having to be locked to a rabid
Rottweiller etc.

Check your insurance T&Cs carefully; IME most bikes are already covered when at home (i.e. lock in
the house, shed or garage). It's when you take them outside that it becomes uneconomic to insure
them - I'd recommend a stout lock and/or never allowing them out of your sight. Get a nasty black
bike [1] to go shopping on if you're a utility cyclist.

[1] unlike cars, black bikes are supposed to be the *least* stolen

Try Fern Insurance in the back of the CTC magazine. They have some good deals on combined household
and bike insurance.

When I looked at that it was very expensive - about 10% of the value insured per year IIRC

My household insurance had a small premium to provide cover for all the bikes in the house and then
any combination up to a value I decided outside the house at any one time on a worldwide replacement
value all risks basis.

I can't remember the exact premium, but it was a long way short of of that. Sum insured is about 6k
and the premium is about £75 or a bit more I believe, all risks new for old. I have a homeworker
contents policy with lots of business equipment cover, so no priority for bikes on that.

Our current insurance (Hill House and Hammond) said words to the effect of you must be joking when
told the cost of a new ICE XL. They seemed annoyed that I'd asked (OK, it was second time. I asked
about 6 months ago when I was considering buying it whether it would be likely to be covered if I
did, and they still had that query on record).

Have a quote from the Halifax for buildings, contents and Trice which is quite reasonable, but I
need to get them to resend it with the Trice listed explicitely. Currently all I have in writing is
a slightly more expensive buildings and contents cover.

Will try the AA. At last check their web site was rude to Mozilla users, but they seem to have fixed
that. Just takes 100% CPU power on my quite old machine for mozilla to handle the huge dropdown
lists (but the new type-ahead matching on them beats Windows) - Comparable to the Halifax, but I'd
want to check with a human as I'm not sure the computer knows what "Cycle (ICE XL NT)" is.

Upping the voluntary excess helps.

Thanks all for your help with this - just insured my bikes with CTC - on line - for £74 (two bikes
at approx £500 each). Regards Simon
