I have been able to make a gear set last through two winters and one
summer in Nebraska. There is a lot of sand and salt on the roads in
the winter. The sand stays through most of the summer even though you
don't see it on the streets....guess where it goes???? Close to the
curb and on most of the sidewalks. So I usually clean the chain and
gears every other day in the winter and at least once a week in the
summer. Depending on riding conditions of course. There are times
that I clean it each day.

I bring mine into the house. Put down newspaper in the kitchen ((tile
floor)) and let it dry for a few hours before cleaning.

I don't change hears and cassettes nearly as often as my winter
counterparts.
