  1. Say took a soda straw, put it in my mouth, and duct taped around it
over my mouth and nostrils, and trained myself to sleep that way for a
month. Would that approximate the results of sleeping in a hypoxic
    tent?

No. It would simulate a restricted airway, which is a different
issue. It would also simulate a very nasty burn on the face, as the
combination of irritants in the adhesive of the duct tape did
progressively more serious damage to your skin.

If you could build a controlled atmosphere room that would allow you
to either reduce the air pressure or dilute the O2 with N2 to simulate
the partial pressure found at the target altitude, you could
accomplish what you seek. this is non-trivially expensive and
hazardous, however; a failure in the gas balance control system could
leave you breathing nearly pure N2, which has been used as a
euthanasia method for experimental animals in the past.

Only if you wore two wet suits and slept in the closet.

I wouldn't go creative with alternating your atmosphere and building
respiration devices. The absolute cheapest way would be setting up
your tent on an actual mountain and train yourself to sleep that way.
In each case, this kind of "therapy" will not benefit you or will not
outweigh if the following things are not in check:
    - your bodyfat %
    - your nutrition in terms of calories, macronutrients AND trace
    component
    - adequate rest and enough sleep for recovery, you don't improve
during your bike ride, you improve when you recover from it.
    - an adapted training schedule for your needs
I'm sure most train enough and wise enough and lots of athletic people
will not have too much excess bodyfat but perfectly dialing in your
nutrition and having the discipline to go to bed early is seldom
heard. Makes a world of difference though.

I believe this is limited to being done in Alabama as well, no?

Heh! If you decide to try that, I suggest you give the CSI guys a heads-up
    first.

    "What's with the straw?"
"Probably a coded message from the killer."
"What's this on the duct tape?"
"Dunno. Better send it to Trace."
