this is not Portland Oregon--we in the bronx are getting tickets for walking
bikes on sidewalks--
While I'm not exactly a fan of the NY Pig Dept., I find it hard to
believe anyone gets ticketed for walking a bike on the sidewalk. I
know the Bronx very well, and I am sure the cop had some other
excuse. Their work gets reviewed, you know, and they would be laughed
out of the precinct for too many "nuisance" summonses and such. They
would look like they're shirking real police work if they wrote bogus
summonses like that -- bogus, I say, because there's no law that you
can walk a bike on the sidewalk. Heck, it's bogus enough to get
ticketed for riding a bike on a sidewalk, never mind walking one.
I actually, finally, got ticketed by a cop for riding on the sidewalk
this past summer...I've been lucky all these years, but Joe Schmoe had
a slow day and needed to try his pen, I guess. So I got a summons,
which of course I completely ignored. Months later, I get mail from
the city court...tossing out my case. I'd never even showed up! And
the judge had tossed it out, anyway -- that's how bogus a charge
"riding on the sidewalk" is.
So I seriously doubt anyone got ticketed for walking his bike.
Remember, them Bronx "homies" will cry everything from racism to
police brutality in order to get out anything.

I don't know about narcissistic cyclists -- maybe they're just
yuppies, that's all (you know how white people are!) -- but I've never
had a problem with a fellow cyclist out on the road. Once a messenger
was going the wrong way and crashed into me somehow, and he wanted to
make sure I was all right! I find cyclists to be more considerate and
conscientious than dog-walkers, old ladies, and in-line skaters.

I've always wondered about that, too. In the Army, they teach you to
conserve ammunition, and shoot to kill, not just keep spitting lead
for the fireworks. I can't imagine what the hell cops are taught,
such that they often wind up emptying their clips.

I think most cops are idiots, anyway. They may be cunning in a street
rat kind of way -- they'd have to be, I suppose -- but talking to many
of them, they're just regular guys...idiots.

credibility re bikes--i know you think it is better to ahve bike paths but
the reality is it may not be.
Interesting perspective...I'd thought along just those lines, but WRT
helmets, not bike paths....
