My old Dremel.... My wife bought it for me as a birthday present when we were living in Japan and I loved what it could do. Saved me countless hours of tedious chores from shaping, cutting, polishing, and grinding.
But the other night I needed to use it in a different location... and forgot to use the transformer....
Japan uses 100 volts. Thailand uses 220-240. The Dremel didn't care not even one little bit for the extra juice. A flash of light, a puff a smoke, and a hardy Hi-yo Silver, and the Dremel was a burnt out mess. I had to go out and replace it.
Couldn't find Dremel here in town, but found a nice Black & Decker rotary set that included a flexible shaft, and that will do the trick. It even accepted the adjustable chuck from the Dremel so I don't have to keep swapping collets when I use different diameters of burrs and bits. I'm satisfied. It is a bit larger but not so much as to be a problem, and will work just fine until I can get a genuine Dremel again. I know, I know... it should have been a Fordham. I just didn't want to spend four times the price.

I own a Dremel tool. I've had one longer than I can remember. It's not something I use every day but when you need a Dremel, you need a Dremel. Nothing else will do the job. I can understand how the loss of such a tool might cause one to reflect.
