Ergon model GP1. They come in small or large, depending on the size of
your hands.

They also come in full length, or a shorter length if you use grip
shift.

Use regular road bar tape. You can wrap it around the flat bar and
around the ends as well. To give it a more 'ergonomic' shape, double
wrap certain parts.

The conversion to drop bars is expensive
and troublesome. Might as well by a drop
bar bicycle and find something to do with
the current bicycle.

Replace the bars with Mary, Space-Bar, or North Roads and it's classic
and comfy--no need to be so radical. The only thing wrong with these
so called "flat bar" bikes is the bar rake, but a bar swap takes just
a few minutes.

Alternately, get a trekking bar, which as all the benefits of a road
bar in the comfort arena:

I have heard good things about these.

My bias is for drop bars not only because there
are many hand positions with concomitant variations
in posture, but the drop bars have many positions with
the grip parallel to the bicycle axis: the most relaxed
position for the wrists.

There are bars that offer such a position that use mtb shifters.
Suggesting that the OP purchase a new bike because you're unaware of
such handlebars is ridiculous.

It's a classic product. I'm more than a little swayed by the fact that
they look like British motorbike grips from the 60s. I like Ourey
grips as well, finally got to try some out the other night on a
friend's bike--but IMHO the Ritchey grips feel even better. The "ergo"
grips I've been seeing with the wide flares certainly are comfortable
in theory--I've just sat on a bike with some at REI, but it seems that
they're simply making up for a handlebar sweep deficiency.
