Problem with Cox News Server

Wayne, which newsreader are you using? I've seen this
happen with buggy old NS versions, fer instance. A confused
newsreader can cause this by not closing connections properly.

Also, try rebooting your router.

This most likely has nothing to do with his newsreader. They are posting
through google using mozilla as their browser. Cox contracted with
Highwinds to do their newgroups. Since then this has been common. The OP
can go to cox.internet.discussion.newgroups for more details.

I'm using Xnews, as I have for the past 4-5 years, and never
experienced this before. I'm going try rebooting everthing...PC,
modem, and router.

I'm using Xnews, as I have for the past 4-5 years, and never
experienced this before. I'm going try rebooting everthing...PC,
modem, and router.

Yes, they have 4 servers: news.west.cox.net, newsbeta.west.cox.net,
news.east.cox.net, and newsbeta.east.cox.net, and I've tried them
all. Same response on all of them. :-( Thanks for the suggestion,

That is true. The cox.internet.* newsgroups are not available via google
as they are internal for Cox internet subscribers only. To access them
you need to configure a newsreader to one of the cox news servers and
then as usual subscribe to the group in your chosen news reader software.

Yes, at the moment I'm using IE6 to access Google Groups since it's
the only access I have into any newsgroups. I normally use Xnews,
which is not a browser but a newsreader client.

I have just tried powering down my computer, cable modem, and router,
the reconnecting the modem, then router, then computer. Still the
same message for the cox news server. I can access the Microsoft news
server with no problem, so I'm fairly well convinced that cox is
having news server problems, not me.

This message means one of two things:

#1 Your newsreader (or kernel) has too many open (or unreleased)
simultaneous sockets to the news servers. If you exit your
newsreader and wait 5 minutes, then go back in and get the same
problem, then it's #2

#2 The Tornado news server they use has a limit to the number of
connections it will accept. I believe Tornado/Highwinds Software
charges for open socket licenses. Cox needs to buy more as it's
maxed out - too many people using it. Or else their news server
needs rebooted because it isn't releasing sockets properly.

I think you use Xnews. There should be a way to tell it how many
simultaneous connections it can handle. 2-4 is pretty standard
for ISP-based news servers. If you exceed the limit, you may get
that message.
