  1. I'm doing an assignment for one of my classes about marathon running and had a couple of questions:

    1. What motivated you to start running marathons?

    2. What motivates you to continue running marathons?

If you could include any other background information, that would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Matt

The challenge. After years as a jogger just trying to get healthy, my mileage was such that I
theoretically was prepared for one, so I tried it just for the challenge.

    Two???

I was born naked and cold, on the unheated floor of a crack house/brothel, then at the wee age of 3
hours old, me mum dropped me on my head, everything after that's a blank.

I thought it would be a good challenge for me, hadn't done anything challenging, except for work, in
a while. I had only been running consitantly for a couple of years and just told my self as a News
Years Resolution that I would run a marathon. 11 months later I did.

The challenge, the competition, the fact that running makes me feel great. I feel like [censored] if I
don't run regularly. I did a 2nd marathon to compete against myself. I know I can't win one, but I
can try to become faster by training hard and pushing my self to limits I thought were impossible.

The training and competition (within myself) gives me an edge that has been absent since high
school, confidence, and it strokes my ego ("I can do anything I want" type of feeling). The high
after a marathon is better than any other drug I did while in college.

I don't feel normal if I don't run, and running Marathons is the pennicle of running for me.

Nearly 20 years of running and a [censored] pile of marathons and longer. The real question - am I real or
Memorex - only the Reaper knows.

A woman. No seriously, I used to run about 12 miles a week and I started dating a woman who logged
60-80 miles a week. So trying to impress I was like "yeah I run." Anyway, she responded with the
"Are you running in the 10k next month?" Still in the impress stage I'm like "Yeah (how far is 10k
anyway?)" So anyway, I ran the race and fell in ove with the energy and excitement of it all. So I
decided I would run 1 of each (5k, 10k, half, and full marathon) and which ever I liked best I would
    stick with.

Ok, I am still motivated by the same woman. My first marathon was Las Vegas of this year. I managed
a 4:02 despite the 40 mph winds. And the woman in question beat me by half an hour. So not really
sure of what I was capable of (because of the wind) I registered and ran Portland. You name it and
it went wrong (dehydrated by mile 15, cramps, and lots of pain). SO I set a PR by 1 minute. Oh and
was beat again by the same woman by 40 minutes. Now it's personal. I am training for Disney and am
determined to have a good race. I believe I am capable of a 3:30 if not better and I am going to
prove it or die trying. And on of these days I am going to beat that woman.

I don't know if it's background info but running to me is like an addiction. If I don't get at least
5 good runs in a week I get a little moody. Maybe it's a little loco but I enjoy running. And, I
enjoy the looks on people's faces when they find out that you run marathons. For those who don't run
    them, they just don't understand.

Hope this helped. Maybe when you are done with the assignment you could post it here for us to see.

Challenge and improved fitness, both physical and emotional.

    Quoted message said:

To answer the question of how far I can go, and how deep I can dig, again both physically and
mentally. Running is a very convenient way to test your will and make you stronger.

Runner for 3 years, age 35, haven't run a marathon in almost two years but could probably run about
    2:50 - 2:52 right now. Planning on a sub-2:50 attempt in May 2004.

    cheers,

    questions:

    1. What motivated you to start running marathons?

When I first started running at age 14 I thought I would run a marathon just because I wanted to. I
never gave it any thought that I wouldn't be able to finish one. I questioned that ability when I
got to the 18 mile mark of my first marathon. "Who told me I could run a marathon?" I remember
thinking to myself for the last 8 miles. When I crossed the finish line I swore I'd never do another
marathon again and that lasted all of a minute. Because when I got my finisher's medal I thought "If
    I train a bit harder...."

    Quoted message said:

    2. What motivates you to continue running marathons?

The first few marathons were motivated by finding out how I could prepare for a marathon, how I
could run one faster and so on. By the 6th or 7th marathon I had finished with that motivation and
decided that I'd use marathons to see different parts of the US and world. Now a marathon has to
take me to a place I've never visited before.

I've been a runner for more than half my life and I now focus on just plain old running and racing
every so often. My last marathon was nearly 10 years ago and I have a slight yen to run another in
    the next few years.

I like the training involved. Oddly enough, I love doing the weekly long runs. I feel very
accomplished afterwards and also enjoy the fact that I can go out and have a nice lunch! And it
gives me a big goal to focus on. I'd like to also start doing a few more "away" marathons, and see
other parts of the country while running the marathon.

far. (Four is this Sunday). Plan to keep running them. Best time, last marathon, 3:49:41.
