Just wondering if i can run my road stem on my mtb, the road stem says that it's clamp size is from 25.4-26, and i saw that usual mtb stem clamp size is 25.4. So sizewise, i assume that there is no problem. But would the strenght of a road stem be able to take mtb riding? basically i only do XC and some light trails.....no jump or drops.

Oooh, good idea. To the OP: you're only putting half your weight on this puppy, and if fails you're in Deepshit (which, BTW, is not in Idaho). Do you really think its a good place to skimp?

So there is actually a difference in strength tolerance between a road stem and a XC stem? Well, the reason why i actually want to use a road stem on my mtb is becoz of its length and angle that fits well, also, if it can actaully be used, tehn i can save some money.
But anyway, thanks a lot for the advice "BB" <[email hidden]> wrote in message "]news:[email hidden]...

A road stem would be strong enough for most off-road uses, but strength is not the reason to not use one. Most road stems are made to clamp a 25.8-26.0mm diameter handlebar, but mountain bars are 25.4mm in diameter. This may seem trivial, but tightening the stem enough to prevent slipping would put a terrible starin on the bolt and the stem, and one or the other would probably fail before too long.

The mountian biker in me really, really wants to scream at you to get a RaceFace stem, pronto...
But then I think of all the cyclocross rides with road strems, and can't fathom that (as long as things are sized right) you'll have a problem.
Thank you, this sounds like the most correct reasoning. Thanks a lot......i will not argue that mtb should use mtb stem, but sometimes it just surprise me to see stem like themson, that look the same, same material but they sell it for both mtb & road, so that was actaully part of the reason why i started asking this question too.

I've been using a road stem on one of my MTB since 01. Its a System 3 with one pinch bolt at the steerer tube. And two bolts at the handlebars. It was low cost. Its silver and a 5 degree rise. It replaced a Control Tech that chipped and needed wrenching all the time. And was flexy. So they will work as long as you match the handlebar and steerer tube in inches or mm.

JensonUSA is blowing out 120mm Easton EA70 stems for $19 now. It is built like a tank and originally sold for $80 - $100. I'm ordering one as we speak for my backup bike.

I have an ITM "Outback" stem which looks a lot like one of the road stems they make. Here's hoping......
