Hi Ray,

Am I correct in assuming that you took your bicycle on the Vline
coach? I rang to inquire about Canberra -> Nowa Nowa with bicycle and
initially they said no (website says no on coaches too) but then
relented and said yes if i packed it down in a suitcase. I forgot to
ask if a box would be acceptable (I assume it would be).

If you or anyone else can share any traveling on Vline with bicycles
experiences I'd be very grateful.

Nope, they were V'Locity car sets in both cases. I don't normally take
my bike on buses at all. As the bike travels free in Vic, I don't see
why I shouldn't make use of the V/Line services. But then I'm a
confirmed train-a-holic from way back.

stop but you wouldn't want to get back on the bike after a stubby of
their "Supershine". That stuff has an alcohol content of something like
11% and makes you feel like you have a hangover as soon as you start
drinking it!

obligated to carry bikes on the coaches.

Also many single rear axle coaches lack the height in the bins to carry
them upright although some tag axle coaches have enough height.

Having said that our company (and some others) will sometimes carry them
if there is enough space after the other luggage has been loaded and
there is enough height in that particular vehicle. Time and other
luggage considerations can sometimes make it difficult.

I would suggest arriving early, being prepared to remove the front
wheel, traveling off peak, and requesting politely.

You're not going Canberra -> Nowa Nowa (Buchan would be even better)
anytime soon are you? ;-)

I was planning to remove both wheels, possibly the handlebars,
definitely the pedals, lower or remove the seat post and bung it in a
box, hopefully with a wheel either side of the main triangle. Do you
think this would be acceptable to the driver? I'm aiming for the size
of a large (ok, very large) suitcase.

It would be ok with me 🙂

Some companies might want to charge you freight rates for something like
that but would still carry it.

I'd like to say that I can't see anyone refusing, but the world isn't
that simple!
