Aero Weight

Tom,

Mine weighs about 23.5 lbs with a pair of 270 gram WTB SPD pedals, and a 40 gram carbon fiber bottle
cage installed. It is a large size frame and is not stock; weight savings have been obtained by
swapping out the chain for SRAM hollow pin chain (70 grams saved), Dura-Ace cassette (50 grams
saved), and Control Tech race skewers (est. 75 grams saved). So a stock large frame Aero should
actually weigh just under 24 lbs dry and ready to ride, but without any gear at all.

When my Ouzo Pro fork and Spinergy Xaero Lite wheels are put on in the spring, that should reduce
the bike's weight to just over 22 lbs.

Tim, I read a review of the OuzoPro regarding weight and it seems like the review was saying that by
the time you added some doohicky to deal with the carbon steerer the weight savings wasn't much over
??. I can't remember the other fork but it was a light one. I think I bookmarked it at work. I'll
look for it Mon and post if I find it. Anyhow, it made me kinda rethink the Ouzo and look more at
wheels, cranks, etc. bill g

The Kinesis Carbon Aero that comes stock on the Aero weighs 570 grams. The Ouzo Pro Aero fork weighs
399 grams with installation hardware. You can do the math. The Kinesis fork is more aerodynamic, so
the real life speed difference between the two forks is marginal except for hilly riding situations.

Dorkus, Well that kinda difference appeals to my weight weenie side. I hate to give up any
aerodynamics but I also hate hauling extra oz's up hills. Why I lost 720 of 'em last year on me and
several more plus added some aero with Zipp 303s bill g

Wow, That a about 1.5 lbs lighter than my large frame Aero. Which has some non-stock items too and
weighs about .5 pounds less than a stock Aero. So you have accomplished a +-2 lb or more weight
savings. Did you Buy a frame and build it up as a custom bike? Looks like your non-stock custom
items include wheels, team issue FSA crank set, BB, chain, both F&R derailleurs, brake levers,
headset, and shifters. Had I known that those type of weight savings were obtainable, I probably
would have spent more $$$ and done a custom build on my Aero too.

I tried hard but cannot vouch for total accuracy on today's weighing (Volae Team @ 24 pounds) at the
health club. Next week, when I get home, I will re-weigh the Volae on my Tanita digital scale, first
me holding the bike ... then just me without the bike. It'll be close to 100% accurate. Bob Siegel

FWIW derek, I know Jorge and his bike. Yes he had it built from a frameset at Power On Cycling. I'm
sure he can fill you in on the rest but I had to respond because I was talking to him a couple
minutes ago as they are tricking out a Barcroft Columbia. I was calling there to check if my
Spinergy Xaero Lite wheel showed up. Sux for me they aren't in yet!

Great Robert,

For performance bents, weight is a big deal. It costs $1-3 per gram to reduce weight on a bent at
this level, roughly $1,000 per pound. If you would be so kind as to remove your gear bag before weigh-
in, that will help the comparison.

Tomorrow I will weigh it and post the weight. In the meantime any guesses?

Over many years, I've found that $1 per gram is my personal cost effective number, or $500 per
pound. Fork and wheels are most likely targets for Aero owners since it already has a carbon seat.
Reynolds/Alpha Q carbon steerer fork or custom wheels with Velocity Aerohead rims would hit the $500
per pound target. But once point of diminishing returns sets in after that, it would definitely go
above my threshold of $1/gram.
