  1. I'm making limoncello. One batch is with 100 proof vodka, the other will
use grain alcohol. I have recipes that call for each. In the mindset of
performing a service to mankind, and in determining which is better, I
will sacrifice many helpless lemons (and a couple limes) to the
limoncello Gods and let you know my findings.

The ingredients of the Vodka batch-

    Microplaning the peel-

    The nekkie fruit-

    Now only time will tell-

I'll be doing the batch using grain alcohol today as soon as I go buy
some more lemons. I think this will make a nice Christmas gift for some
cow-orkers of mine instead of the normal alcohol filled chocolates I get
from Europe or buy at the military commissary.
I'm using Chris Dabney's favorite recipe found on Eggullet.

But what, pray tell, are cow-orkers? :-)

And I'd like to offer my services with taste-testing each batch. It's the
least I can do to help mankind, after all... 😉

I *love* limoncello! Maybe I should take the plunge and make some as well.

Thanks. How long do you let yours sit before adding the simple syrup and
    more of the liquor?

nothern Italy is the mother country of Grappa 🙂))
But please, don't make a limoncello with Vodka, please!!!! 🙂))
And another thing: Limoncello must be served very cold!

Some friends just recently returned from Italy and brought us a bottle
of Piemme Limoncello di Sorrento. I can't say it's something I'll miss
if I never have it again so, the remaining 7/8 of the bottle will
probably collect dust in the booze cabinet.
It was served very cold but perhaps not cold enough. Then again, you
can drink almost anything if you get it cold enough.
    I'll stick to B&B.

    Ross.

dearest christina and i spent a couple of days in bassano del grappa,
northern italy. guess their industry. i think at least three distilleries
downtown (downtown!!) plus a grappa museum. nice town, i could become a
member of cafe' society there but it's too north.

Could you post the recipe please. Last year my friend and I made
antipasta - lots of fun to make but I didn't like it that much. This sounds
kind of neat for this year and we're looking for something to make in bulk.
    Thanks. e.

  19. sorry elaine, didn't mean to come off like a jerk (and the rest of you shut
    up)

an antipasti is usually a plate of......pick any of the following
    -bruschetta
    -salumi
    -other cured meats
    -olives
    -cheeses
    -pickled vegetable
    -raw veggies
    -tapenade
    -stuffed mushrooms
-tomatoes w/ mozzarella and basil (fosco has a few good pics)

it can be influenced by non-natives, i've had hummous and tzat-tziki
    variations

it's an hors d'oeuvre platter to liven you palate, stimulate conversation,
unwind while reading the rest of the menu

Back in my working days, maybe 22 years ago, we'd sometimes go to Marino's
Ristorante, on Melrose at Cole. We'd get a big platter of antipasti, pretty
much as you described, to start. The waiter would discreetly watch us like
a hawk. He would then show up with plates of whatever he saw we were
favoring. We would generally have a glass of a white wine with it, then
order a bottle, as I deemed appropriate, to go with the main course. $75
for two, including tax and tip. Stu had never spent that much for lunch in
his life, and although he didn't have much of the wine, he was looped by
the time we got back to work. Those were the days, my friend; I thought
they'd never end. Now, I've been retired for ten years. ;-/
