  1. I've seen Cento's line of "All Purpose" canned tomatoes in various types,
    peeled, diced, crushed, etc. http://tinyurl.com/3bmugf

"All Purpose" canned tomatoes is a joke, right?!?

All Purpose flour I'm OK with.

I've never heard of another all purpose food.

    No all purpose cooking oil.
No all purpose hamburger but, it's not all ground sirloin or ground chuck
but a mix of all kinds of meat scraps, so in that sense it's an all-purpose
    grind of burger.

    No all purpose cheese.

Would 2% milkfat milk be the all purpose milk, compared to whole and non-
    fat?

Can you think of another all purpose food???

All Purpose flour I'm OK with.

It does an adequate job on most cakes, and a passable job for bread,
and is totally fine for bread/pizza crust/bagels if you add a small
    amount of wheat gluten.

I think that peanut is pretty good as an all purpose oil. It's no
substitute for olive oil, but olive oil is flavorful, and used to add
    flavor.

No, because I don't think that it suits the purpose of being an
enjoyable beverage (I only drink whole milk), and the anti-fat folks
would think it's too fat filled. 2% milk is more like a no-pupose
    milk 🙂

I don't drink milk ordinarily but I buy non-fat for breakfast cereal unless I
make a recipe that calls for milk, I'll always use whole milk. I couldn't
    picture popovers with anything less!

My grandmother wouldn't touch anything less than whole milk in her coffee,
declaring that "skim milk just makes it look sickly!" 😄

No, for starters, there's stewed tomatoes, and various kinds of spiced
tomatoes (Italian, Mexican, garlic and basil and garlic). I'm sure that
there are more, but I haven't used them.

A good baker wouldn't be. Flour for bread is different than flour for
    cake.

How about salt? If a recipe calls for "salt", most people use
granulated salt. There's also rock salt, kosher salt, sea salt, garlic
    salt and onion salt.

How about sugar? If a recipe calls for "sugar", most people use
granulated sugar. There's a couple of kinds of brown sugar and powdered
    sugar.

How about eggs? Eggs can be included in countless recipes. Likewise for
    garlic.

All purpose vodka, good for getting one warmed up or for use as a

That's just an old hen's tale. It does exactly the opposite!

All purpose vodka would be the cheapest on the shelf. It's only all purpose
    is to get pickled on.

    Stan,

Eggs were suggested earlier in the thread.

Would egg size be at issue? And how are eggs "sized" anyway? By weight or
    volume?

    Om??????

I'd LOVE to see a "net" of garlic bulbs labeled "All Purpose" Garlic! That's
where I balked at the sight of "All Purpose" tomatoes! 😄 Silly, ain't it?!!

    By weight.

Unlike show and dress sizes, egg sizing is actually regular and sensical
(at least in the US). The steps between each size are a quarter-ounce,
and as far as I know that increment is constant all across the range.

That is for ignorant newbie cooks that think you have to use brand names
    mentioned in recipes. ;-)

  17. All Purpose Food ??

    The Good Ol' Easter Ham;

    Baked ham
    ham sammiches
    ham salad
pea or bean soup ( with the bone )
    midnight ham slices
    ham n' eggs
    ham n' cabbage
    etc.

Now that I've had a good days sleep, I realize what Andy was probably
    really getting all.

All foods are "All purpose" foods. Name brands, for the most part, don't
really matter in the grand scheme of things.

It's yet another marketing strategy. ;-)

I think the "All Purpose" labeled Cento canned tomatoes may actually be
correct to a degree. They also sell "San Marzano" tomatoes (Which I still
can't find!!!) that should be blessed with the DOP emblem.

I found the following comments on a forum somewhere...

    Quoted message said:

San Marzano "DOP" tomatoes are from the Italian Amalfi coast. To be
specific Naples, in Campania. This area is in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.
Legend, and some serious science, has it that because of the unique
volcanic soil and climate there, the tomatoes are unlike any others "in the
    world".

The DOP designation is very important because it insures the the product
has been certified to come from a Denominazione di Origine Protetta, the
Italian equivalent of Protected designation of origin. They have been
picked at the ripest perfection, peeled and canned with some basil.
I've seen seeds from these DOP tomatoes, brought into this country and
grown into very good tomatoes and marketed as San Marzano - but they can
    not carry the DOP symbol.
    <

So "All Purpose" could loosely mean lesser quality varieties of tomatoes
that they can from regions other than San Marzano. ???

    ?Perhaps "all purpose Parmesian Reggiano"
    ?Perhaps "all purpose Rocquefort"
    ?Perhaps "all purpose Champagne"
    etc etc etc

I re-checked my 4 cans of San Marzano (Luzzi brand and Francesconi brand) to
make sure they say D.O.P. and it's in big letters on the front of the cans.
I have seen some other cans of San Marzano; but I don't know if I personally
would call them 'all purpose San Marzanos.'
Probably the price is too close to bother buying - why not get the real
    thing.
    Expensive? Damned right.
