if the pedals don't have a cleat receptor, they're just pedals and your
cleats are useless. just buy new pedals. $45 is a great deal.

i have had pretty good experience with the cheaper nashbar branded
pedals. $20, sometimes you can get it w/free shipping too. they also
have pedals that only have the SPD mechanism on one side, which might
appeal to the OP.
