Dear Alan,

It's probably a bike with old-fashioned inch-pitch (skip-tooth)
sprockets and gears instead of modern half-inch pitch.

Here's a 1940 Schwinn Majestic with skip-tooth gearing:

I don't think that anyone makes skip-tooth chain any more, but maybe

I provided a local customer with a five foot length of Diamond
inch-pitch roller chain here earlier this week. It's for 3/16"
chainrings and sprockets.

Sounds good--I must be misreading the pdf, or else it didn't cover
that chain.
