I still lurk here all the time and my little fifth grader that used to post
here all the time is now a senior in high school and is the captain of the
cross country team and his "little" brother runs second on the team as a
sophomore. On Labor Day, all six of us either did the 5k or 10k which is
the first time the whole family did the same race. Even with a break on the
entry, it was expensive.

My achilles tendonitis is better and I have come to enjoy road biking on my
off running days. September days are beautiful and cool in the mornings and
I wish they would last forever.

it's $25x2 for both races per person. At best you'd drink a few more
cups of water or Gatorbarf. In my mind this borders on greed.

As an RD myself I know that races cost so much per person be it shirts,
food, drink etc, but the number of families that would be able to run
would not take any race to the financial cleaners. Races should be able
to raise money AND promote family running. One of my races has a $2
entry fee, lest you think I'm insincere.

I think I will stir this topic in the next issue of my runners club
newsletter. My advantage being the editor.😉

I don't mind paying (we've had a flat $40 for a family) certain amounts for
racing but I won't do the $25 per for six racers. Too many choices for a
family where $150 just for the fee can be used elsewhere.

We have a sort of extended family beach vacation each year and run a
5K, often bringing eight participants to the race. That particular
race is only $10 but each family member pays their own way. We
usually take home about 2/3rds of the trophies.

This last year we were set up for a 1-2-3 sweep on the male side until
we were led astray by the race four wheeler.

Most races benefit a charity and I don't think a family discount is
necessary or appropriate. If there are sponsors for the shirts and
post race stuff, the whole nut should be tax deductible.

The local running club does have a family discount for membership.
Any past two family members are essentially free.

Most of our local 5k races are about $20, maybe $25, but not sure of any
family discounts. Sometimes kids rates. One of the mtn races does have a
family discount. Most that have shirts and food probably do not have a
family discount, although some do. I think a family discount is a good
idea to encourage participation, but at the same time if a race has t
shirts and food, that cost is on a per person basis.

But this may be one of the reasons why those Tuesday night races are so
popular - $5/race ($2 for kids), $10 for family. Adult season passes are
$30 and family season pass is $60. They do limit the family season pass
to 2 generations (parents and children). That's potentially 9 races for
the family for $60. No shirts, no food, although occasionally some
sponsor might provide a coupon or something. There is a potluck (heated
building at start/finish) and series awards after the last race of the
series. This series is put on by Anchorage Parks&Rec on Parks&Rec
trails, but the races have gotten so large they do ask for some
volunteer help now with setup / cleanup, which is minimal. No bibs, no
chips, but they do have electronic timing (vs writing time on sheet of
paper). Just grab your number at end of chute, write your name on it,
and put it in the fishbowl for your league.

For perspective, last Tues night race had 568 participants with 234 (127
girls, 107 boys) of them being the Munchkins. That was the largest of
the 3 leagues. There were also some kids in the Farm league. I think the
Munchkins participation may be less when the weather starts getting
cooler and wetter, but the race near Halloween has costumes.

Glad to see you're all still running, and oldest two sons are doing
really well. It was interesting how your oldest's race reports changed
over time.😉 (just a little longer than I've been posting here) I'll bet
it does get expensive if everyone does the race.

I think the right solution to this dilemma is not special family pricing, but
a slightly more scaled down operation. There are already *some* such races,
more would be even better. It's not beyond the realm of possibility to hold a
tee-shirt free, tag scored race in a public park for around $10- per person
(until very recently, NYRR offered as low as $11- with the goofy tee-shirt).

Serious road racers do not need or want a cotton tee-shirt for every race they
run (there are several running jokes my team mates and I have about what to do
with all those tee-shirts ! Cleaning bikes, washing cars, oven mitts, etc). And
some families might decide that they don't really need to buy a cotton
tee-shirt for each family member.

Do the same for postrace food, at least for anything shorter than a
half marathon or maybe marathon. Unless the food is a big feature of
the race, as I'm imagining a nice slab of salmon might be up Dot's way
for certain races. Set up a concession instead. It's a race, not a
fashion show / buffet! (And race tees - woohoo, some fashion ya got
there...)

Or do these things add negligible cost, and the vast bulk of the
expense comes from insurance, road closings, that sort of thing?

I do enjoy the local 5k summer series where five bucks gets you a nice
race experience, water at the end, and even a medal for what works out
to something like half the top finishers.
