Folding bikes

Further to my last message I was thinking that a folding bike would be a
good way to introduce my 40 year old daughter to cycling. She didn't do much
cycling as a child. Any comments on this?

He does several folders and can advise on what would be suitable.

The only difficulty is that I don't think he has any of the cheap ones
like Dahon. But if his are too expensive he will know what cheap ones
there are and where to get them.

Have a look at some of these bikes and how easy or not they fold.

The one that I liked was the Pocket Rocket, not due to it's folding prowess
but due to the features it has, more like a proper bike than a folder.

For not too much more than that you can get a Brompton (they're around
1600 through Greenspeed IIRC), I know a guy who's cycled most of the
world on one and doesn't have a bad thing to stay about them.

They're also the only folding bike I've seen which is perfectly stable
when folded (the rear rack come underneath and supports the bike)

One cheap one to consider is the 'Yeah', RRP is ~$400.

I've got a Brompton (I bought it from www.sjscycles.com) and I like it fine.
It's probably not the best riding folding bike, but it's not at all bad, and
the more upright posture suits me, a not-very-experienced cyclist in her
40s. I chose it because it folded up the smallest of all the ones I looked
at, and I wanted to take it on the train every day. It was great for that.
If you buy it from a shop, get them to show you how to fold it - it's dead
easy once you've "got" it, but it did take me a couple of attempts.

I spent a year researching folders for a 4 month European trip. we have 3 BikeFridays - probably the most 'bike-like' and best riding/handling of the folding bikes. All with 20 inch wheels, almost all custom frames. You can order over the net from BF in Seattle, or through Epic Cycles in Brisbane.

Bike Friday have just released a new 16 inch wheel folder called the Tikit that folds in literally seconds one-handed. Fun demo video on their web page. there are often second hand BFs for sale if you want cheaper. there are plenty of folders around, but often not pleasant to ride, and heavy. It may take more than 2 weeks from the US but there will be stock in Brisbane, and it's little trouble to get it freighted down.
