  1. A friend has just bought a Black Hawk electric mountain bike. It goes 15mph
but he has been told it can go 22mph if he unrestricts it. Anyone heard of
this or how its done please.

    Thanks

  2. Cool idea. I saw a homemade version of this back in the early 1970s when
gas was hard to get. I wonder how well they do on hills? - CW

I always thought that the point of biking was to pedal. If you must
ride an electric bike, why not just go all out and ride an ATV?

    Disconnect the brakes.

Even electric vehicles are NOT allowed on bike paths or trails.
Please keep your MOPED on the street.

  6. For a few hundred dollars one can buy a 26" wheel with a motorized
hub, batterry and controls. Installation is supposedly straightforward.
I've read about two versions, the 15 mph for about $400. and the
    25+mph for about $900.

My knees and hilly neighborhood make it tempting for an errand bike,
the motor can be used to assist as well as just cruise, but it's easier to drive.

I wouldn't risk it on my local trails, too tree-lined and twisty.

  7. The appeal of an electric powered bicycle is the possibility of riding it to work (about 5 miles each way) in fair weather. If it could do 40 mph moped style, I'd be OK in local traffic. I like MTBs but don't feature buying a skinny tired road bike. Like someone said, electric bikes are for the street, not the trail. - CW

  8. 40mph in traffic on a bicycle? You'd be OK?

    Get a vespa.

  9. I ride a motorcycle on the freeway at 75, why not an electric moped on a frontage road at 40. The route to my normal workplace does not involve a lot of ducking and diving through traffic. Even better would be one of those tricycle jobs with the full-coverage canvas and plexiglas shell around it. It would cause a sensation parked next to the giant pickup trucks. - CW

If you take the motor, battery and other associated gubbins off it will
be easier to pedal then 22mph shouldn't be too difficult.
