At the moment I runa standard 52/42/32 campgy triple with a 23/23, 8 speed cassette. However, the 52 doesn't see alot of use, due to the fairly hilly terrain here, but I was thnking of swapping the big chainwheel for a 48 or may be even a 46. Will that work however with the 42 middle when changing down/up? Advice gratefully received!

Shouldn't be a problem, you may want to lower your front dérailleur a little though, and re-size your chain.
Take a look at this link from the Park Tool's web site on how to properly adjust the front dérailleur.

It's often recommended there be a 10 tooth difference between big and middle rings,due to possible interference with the deralier. That is not absolute due to differences in derailers,but you might need to switch to a double derailer.
