  1. I am looking at a Schwinn Road/Cross bike and am having trouble deciding the size. I am 6' 4" with a 33 1/2 inseam. I have shorter legs and a long upperbody. I was looking at this bike to start with, but not knowing about sizes I need help.

I went to wrenchscience.com and did it the best I could and got a frame size of 56cm (a little under 22"😉. I had the guy at the bike shop measure the schwinn (they only have large left) and it was 21". Now i dont know how big the XL is due to the fact they dont have anymore in stock and they can not order me one unless its online. I dont see the problem with it being slighly shorter but is it a problem in the long run if i get a slightly smaller size? When im at the store what should i look for other then the 1-2inch when standing on the ground. Whats the best way to decided (if there is any way to) if its going to stay comfortable for a long ride not just the test ride?

    Thanks for any help.

The following link is to Schwinn's specification page for your bike:
    schwinnbike.comintbikes detail.php

The dimensions for the different sizes are at the bottom of the page. All the dimensions are in millemeters. I would use thier XL and I am only 6' 0", but I have really long legs.

Be very wary of a bike shop that just has you stand over the top tube of the bike to fit it to you😠 . That is just the first step. The best thing to do is find a bike shop that has a Fit Kit and let them fit you. This would be your best bet with your slightly non-standard physique. If no one in your area has a Fit Kit, then a good, experienced bike shop employee can get you fitted fairly well. Just remember that the fit of the bike is the most important factor to consider when purchasing a new bike. A poorly fitted bicycle is probably the number one reason that people quit riding. It ain't no fun if'n it don't feel good!

  3. I just test rode a Trek 7.6 FX this past weekend in two different sizes, and it quickly became clear that the smaller sized bike was terribly wrong for me compared to the larger, correctly sized bike. I would not have known just how different from one another they were had I not ridden them. I'm 6'0" with a 32" inseam and I'm comfortable on a 57 or 58cm frame, generally speaking.

Head back to the bike shop and ask if there are any bikes you can test ride that are similar to the one you want that's out of stock. If so, try a 56cm, then try a 60 or 62cm which is probably more along the lines of the proper size for your measurements. You should be able to then distinguish what it's like to feel more or less cramped on a smaller bike vs. comfortable on a larger one.

Shops like to clear out their '07's at this time of year to make room for the '08's. Don't let a salesman talk you into buying the wrong bike. That's the impression I'm getting about your experience, or maybe the salesman just doesn't know the product very well.

56cm seems way to small for you @ 6'-4". I'm 6'-1" and 57/58cm frame fits me to a tee. I will say that based on a traditional diamond frame. I know the relaxed frames run in smaller sizes. With that said, it looks like you need a bike that fits you for fitness not racing. Also, budget. I've looked at a lot of those types of bikes especially at Performance Bike, which just opened locally. I'd save my money (not much more) for a Trek 7.x FX. Just a better bike and Trek stores have a fit system at their stores. If you want to get out now, look for a used flat handle road bike or hybrid on a local craigslist for a few hundred bucks. Who knows, you might just stop there. My 2¢.🙂
