Ron Johnson said:I am putting together a Fixed Gear bike and I have everything except the bottom bracket. I am
planning on using my old but beautiful super record cranks that I purchase new in 1985 or 86. The
bottom bracket that I have is Italian thread and I need a English threaded version. Are there any
modern options besides an expensive Phil Wood bottom bracket? Is it possible to just replace the
cups or is the spindle different between the two versions? Should I spend the next month on eBay
looking for a good used Super Record BB? Are there other Campagnolo bottom brackets that fit these
cranks. I searched the archives and now I am even more confused. It seems that at some point Super
Record cranks started utilizing asymmetrical bottom brackets. Help.....
Although there were Super Record (titanium) crank bearing assemblies, the more popular format was
"Super Record Reduced" , supplied with a regular 1046a Nuovo Record BB. All systems for the Record,
Nuovo Record and Super Record are asymmetric spindles.
Your 1046a will have the thicker cups with 'exclusion grooves' cut into the lip where the spindle
passes through and your spindle should be marked '70-SS'. By using the thinner Record or more
available Gran Sport cups ( thin ones can be identified by the lack of those spiral cuts in the
side) and by reversing your spindle so the short side is on the right, you should be able to get
great chainline with a single ring on that crank.
Use plenty of grease, a fresh pair of Campagnolo retainers ( or loose grade 25 balls) and do reuse
the plastic liner which fits between the cups to keep the bearings clean.
There are plenty of change gears available for your 144mm crank in the intermediate ( 44, 46, 48)
single-speed range.
