  1. I start cabrillo college on tues day and I have a Adaptive PE swimming
class ( all the others were full).
I never worn a speedo in public before and wanted to know what I
should do I have 2 speedos I found one in the locker room that was my
size a (black one) and I bought one when I was going to try out for
water polo last year at my high school but ended not joining the team
(a red & black one). I am not sure what to do I spent $30.00 dollars
on it. But I do not want to be the only one in a speedo ether. Please
I need some help here Jamie

  2. You have a few simple choices.

    1) Wear it, and be who you are.
    2) wear a pair of swim trunks, risk being the only one wearing them.
    3) Ask someone who is in that class, or who teaches that class about "proper
    swim atire"/

Be prepared for the onslaught of cruel comments from this board about this
    subject

  3. Thanks for the tips. and the warning I think I will just try to go for
it. But like I said I just do not want to be the only one in the class
wearing a speedo. Even if only 1 or 2 people are wearing them I would
    feel a lot better

The purpose of speedos is to reduce drag when swimming competitively.
They wear out faster and there is no use for them outside of the
training, racing world, unless you are looking to get a tan or show
off. If you foresee that the swimming class will have big mileage and
regular shorts will interfere with your form, go for the speedos.
Otherwise, get cheap regular shorts a k-mart for 5 bucks. They'll be
on the discount racks with all the summer clothes. Nowadays, even
competitive swimmers train with regular shorts to increase drag. They
save the speedos for the races. you can also buy speedo-like shorts
for training that are double and they have a thicker less aerodynamic
    material that lasts forever.

Unless there will be other competitive swimmers in your class, I doubt
that anyone will wear speedos. since, in fact, it sounds like a learn
to swim class, i would skip the speedos for when the class has a race.
or save them for when you join the water polo team in college. They'll
wear out in a few months anyways.

  5. Ok thank you it does sound like a learn to swim class. But you never
know. We will see what the teacher says the first day to the class. An
see what ever one else wears also. But I will keep them in my locker
    just in case. Thanks Jamie

  6. Thank you all of you all for your quick replys. It really helps I just
did not want to be the only one in a speedo or in swim trunks. Thanks

There are competitive swimmers who wear drag shorts over their speedos
during training, but I've never seen a competitive swimmer wear regular
shorts for training. And the use of drag shorts is controversial: Some
coaches and swimmers think they're a great idea, while others think they
distort the training process, teaching you how to overcome the drag of
the drag suit, not how to swim fast with no drag suit.

It would be more accurate to say that speedos are for serious swimmers,
while regular shorts are for people who just want to sit on the beach,
splash around in the water, and walk on the boardwalk.

That's rather misleading! Speedos wear out in a few months if you're a
competitive swimmer and wear them in chlorinated pools one or two hours
a day, 6 days a week at swim practices and meets. If you only swim for
    a half hour, 3 days a week, they'll last a lot longer!

  10. ok thank you that is some nice info to know.

What are drag shorts? Are they "regular" swim suits? And where do
"jammers" fit into this thread? When I started surfing in the mid-50s (19,
not 18) we bought window cloth for our "baggies," which became jams or
jammers later on. Since I have recently gotten back into relatively serious
swimming I find things and terminology have changed considerably, although
    I do understand speedo.

    Please enlighten me.

    Thanks,
    Sandy

Type it into google, and this is the first thing u get

Jammers are shorts that are tight, think of ur racing brief with material
going to your knees. It is still as tight at the racing brief, but more
    material

I have a jammer. I do not like it, it bugs my legs and has less flexibility.
I notice this the most when I do the breast stroke.

I also have a drag suit. it is worse for mobility than the jammer. Unlike
the jammer and the brief, the drag suit is not flexible or streachy.

    I still prefer my brief.

You should probably talk to someone about that problem, after you learn
    how to swim.

Why not. All proper swimmers wear them.
Wearing baggy shorts to swim not only looks silly, it is the aquatic
equivalent of running whilst pulling a cart along behind you.

Let's face it, the best and most practical thing to wear foe swimming is
nothing. I long for the day when this is acceptable everywhere, as the
current failure to accept the sight of a small proportion of the human body
    is illogical and unhealthy.

  16. Ok how doe's this sound I wear the speedo under the trunks.Tell I
found what ever one else is wearing. That way is everone else is
trunks I can just keep the trunks on or if other are getting in with
speedo's on I can take off the trunks also. Thanks again Jamie

The problem is you are more worried about what everyone else is wearing
    than you are about swimming.

  19. Yea I guess I am I just hate being the only one. When I am doing stuff
    like this.

    Thanks Jamie
