Does anyone have any suggestions for loose-fitting tights? I have regular tights for longer training
rides but am looking for something more casual? for short errands and commutes.

Sure. Just get a size too big :-)

I'm assuming you're talking about long tights and not shorts. Or maybe long shorts. A few thoughts
come to mind:
1) Normal, "tight" polypro tights are nice & warm on a cold, wet night. Looseness would tend to
defeat that benefit.
2) Putting on normal, "tight" tights for short runs is too much of a hassle. I guess you're looking
specifically for a solution to that.
3) There are all kinds of long, below the knee, cargo-type MTB shorts on the market. These might be
your best bet for sunny-day errands and commutes, but they're not much good in wet weather. Maybe
supplement them with knee warmers if you're in a cool or cold climate (I greatly believe in not
getting knees chilled).
4) For short rides to the supermarket etc, I get by okay with just generic, cheap jeans with the
cuffs rolled up, over lycra cycling shorts. This approach requires more frequent laundering and
lots of spare, clean pants & shorts, because riding seems to make jeans get funky real fast.
cheers, Tom

Maybe you're thinking of something like this:

Never tried them for riding, but they are great for cold weather running and perfectly presentable
for casual wear. They are cut trim, but aren't skintight.
Many manufacturers make a similar product.

Not looking to have the crotch of my tights hang down to my knees.

Not if their constructed of the proper material?

Yes - exactly my point.

See response to you comment about shorts above.

too uncomfy for me.
If there are any parallels here, I would be interested in something that fits like sweat pants (the
old cotton or cotton/poly variety) but made with "cycling" type material (lycra, coolmaxis, etc.)

Chris:
Looks like it could work. Sometimes hard to tell about the "baginess" unless you see someone
wearing them.
Any idea on the cost?

Full retail is about $60 for Hind. With a little sleuthing you can do better, perhaps finding them
as low as $40.
Try a shopping search on Yahoo and sort by price.
There are lots of knockoffs. Roadrunner Sports version is $35. See: roadrunnersports.com-roadrunnersports.com-Open ↗

What I really like for this is a pair of stretch fleece warm-up pants. Mine are Malden Mills
Powerstretch (same material as Gekko Gear "IceBike" tights -- fuzzy on the inside, smooth outside),
but are cut slightly looser than skin tight and have full length zippers on the outside of both
legs. I had them made custom by www.youngoriginals.com. Very comfortable, easy to get on & off, look
presentable for errands, etc.

I've recently bought a pair of Sugoi "Conrad" pants because I liked the "Conrad" shorts. The pants
don't have a liner so I wear them over cycling shorts or knickers. They're discontinued but you
might be able to find some on the web. Discounted, they're about $60.
Articulated knees, velcro fly and cuff closures, seamless crotch, two jeans-type pockets and a
zipped cargo pocket. The fabric is windproof soft brushed nylon that feels like cotton. They're cut
roomy in the thighs and tighter at the calves. Adjustable elastic waist band.

I have some "sweatpants" made by Columbia Sportswear Company (in the USA, no less) that are 92%
polyester and 8% Lycra blend that I use for cold weather riding. I use Velcro backed pant clips to
keep them out of the chainring. They are black, so chain lubricant/grunge marks will not show up.
These should be available from almost any "outdoor recreation" type store.
