It's not PC, but there's a lot of truth, and reality, under the sarcasm and parody. Bravo

Funny you should say that because I happened to read this recently

Feel the power of the dark side

    That old time religion

"It's not that I don't believe in God, or think that religion is a bad = thing. I don't,"
pontificated a Ducati rider who shall remain nameless = in the paddock at Laguna Seca. He spoke of
the mental edge needed to = race at the front in AMA and World Superbike. He has watched his rivals

Are you suggesting that Mike didn't race his heart out? Any particular instances you'd like to offer
as evidence, or other anecdotal evidence or opinions you can share about why Mike doesn't currently
    have a team?

Holy [censored]...........I'll pass this along to all those Pro's that don't have jobs for next year so
they know why the phone isn't ringing! Seriously, if anyone had seen Michael at the end of the World
RR there wasn't anything left to spill... It was a tough, tough year for him, he trained his ass off
starting in December/January, maybe too hard, but it certainly wasn't from lack of commitment or
dedication. He had a serious bout with mono that really took a major toll mid-year. Hey, that's bike
racing, you have to learn to comeback from setbacks and frustrations. Even without a team, he is
making plans to start training again in New Mexico in December. He isn't going to give up and he
will be back again for another year.

Regardless of ones opinion of YMC's personality traits, there is not, IMO, any reason to suspect he
hasn't given his best while racing. The sport grows and contracts with the economy. It isn't a
pleasant time right now for many domestic teams (and some Div 1 -- III either). Look at West
Virginia for example. And I don't buy the argument that you have to hate to win. You have to want to
win and have the ability. If some of the winners are jerks, I think that is more a commentary on
society and the individual as opposed to proof of a theory for winning.

Hey. That'd suck. YMC is one of the more interesting young personalities around, and he can
really ride too. Glad to hear he's still getting ready for next year. Good luck to both of
    you. Bill C

Actually, to clarify.....YMC asked OMC not to post here ! He will still write his bike.com articles.

was an unhealthy emotion, so he tried being Mr. Nice Guy for a time, but without that extra surge
of motivation that comes from the animosity, he lost touch for a few races.

"Let yourself go to the dark side," wheezed the Rebel Master to Luke Skywalker in Return of the

I'm not all that sure that Kocinski hated his rivals, but he definitely was on the dark side. A
strange one, no doubt. Obsessive-compulsive behavior galore. Oh, and a haunted motor home, heh.
But Randy Mamola would be a guy to sort of prove the validity of the argument. Way too nice of a
guy to actually hate the guys he raced against, but he never won the title. Mamola was the
Raymond Poulidor of the 500GP class with four runner-up positions. How old was the article, btw?
Mick Doohan had to have hated everyone else (especially his team mates) as much as Fogarty, but
Fogarty was far more obvious in his expressions of
it. Micky D just did everyone else's heads in with mind games (the most subtle form of hate): I'd
bet that 90% of the other riders had lost before the flag even flew.

Armstrong on the darkside ? In the second year of his pro career I read an interwiew in which he
stated agressively that "... wanted to kick some ass". Nothing wrong with that in the modern sense
but still hardly a Christian ethic.

I think the circumstances around his contract negotiations with a particular pro team when he was
diagnosed with cancer have left him bitter (maybe rightly so) and this is a major source of his
    darker motivation.

As a counter point I saw a tv program that correllated religion with sport and a lot of high
achievers are deeply religious - Johnaton Edwards (triple jump record holder), Brazillian football
team (they had undershirts that proclaimed "Jesus the Saviour" on when the won the World Cup
Final), Michael Johnson (200 & 400m Olympic Champion and world record holder) is a devote
Christian and regards his faith as an intrinsic part of his success. Wasn't Carl Lewis a dediacted

I think there's little historical evidence to support the notion that Christians are incapable of
hatred. A goodly number of card carrying Nazis were Christian. Ever heard of the Spanish
Inquisition? The list here could get very large, and it seems like it ought to be a familiar notion.

The point is that Christians are still capable of hate. Become a Christian, fight to prove your
righteousness by defeating those heathens you're racing against AND ... you're right there on the
    dark side.

I am SOOO off topic here.

I think that you've gone off on a major tangent here. The topic relates to source of motivation for
sporting performance. On one hand there is a small minority who use their deeply held religious
beliefs/ideologies (Christian, Muslim, what ever) as a source of motivation and inspiration. On the
other hand there are others who use life events, rivalries or even hatred as a deep source of
    motivation that drives their performance.

But whenever someone mentions the Nazis in a thread I known it's time to wrap it up. Since we all
know that the Nazis are at the bottom of everything we'll leave it there.

Well, you've broadened it out to include others as well. That makes a big difference.

Nazis aren't at the bottom of much of anything these days that I know about. Seems to me like the
problem has ALWAYS been that people find a reason to believe they're better than everyone else and
therefore entitled to something. We're pretty creative with those reasons.
