OT- strange cat behaviour

I'm so sorry about your dog. My Missy is 18 and I don't think she has a
lot of time left. My cats are all strange. I don't have an explanation for
you but the cat may be grieving or something. Were the dog and cat pals?

(since I've had her). She's struttin'.

Animals grieve too. They just don't know where their friend has gone
or why.

Not really. Yes, cats are strange!!

You'd be surprised. We always had a cat and dog together.... they
would pretend not to be friends if anyone was watching, but they
played together very nicely when they thought they were alone.

It's not strange behavior at all. Animals pine for their lost friends.
Even if the animals were not especially close, the surviving animal knows
something is wrong. In either case it stresses them out and they act out in
odd ways. They have complicated emotions, just like people. They simply
lack the ability to express it in ways we relate to. I have read a great
many accounts that when surviving animals are allowed to take part in the
passing of a house mate, as in being there when the other animal passes,
that they tend to go thought a much easier time of it afterwards. I have an
old, tired tom - I call him the old warrior -- he is just so dignified and
proud. When his time comes, I hope to have his final moments be here at
home an that his mates can be with him. Of course that is not always
possible or in the best interest of the animal. But to the extent it is
possible, I will do it.

Sorry about your dog - pets just don't live long enough.

Your cat is trying to find physical comfort because it is emotionally
missing the dog, even if they weren't friends. The cat probably
thinks that if it goes here or there or even there, the dog will show
up.

(IOW, who knows why cats do what they do?)

Good for your kitty. My 2-year old rescue cat, Jackson, caught the same
mouse twice. I took the mouse away from him, put it back into the woods
next door, and he brought it back into he house the next day. This
time, the mouse went on a road trip. He is enjoying the good life on a
heavily wooded lot, and I hope Jackson can not find him.

Will Jackson ever grow out of this? Let's hope so.

Even though cats and dogs are of different species, they do bond and
do go through seperation anxiety, just like animals do when you leave
for the day. They feel confused and abandoned and that makes them do
neurotic behaviors, such as get on top of the fridge and sleep in the
bathtub.

One of my dogs has been acting strangely since our neighbours moved out
last weekend. They had two dogs, both pit bulls, and one of them used to
come over to visit whenever we were outside, even came and waited for us.
While one dog doesn't seem to notice the change, the other one is just
beside himself, pacing back and forth and looking next door all the time.

His odd behavior might be because he's grieving the
loss of the dog.

Lots of good advice so far. When cats are scared or stressed or bored
or hunting, they seek higher ground. My previous cat, Boaz, was
living on top of an 8' high showcase because she was scared of the
other 7 cats in the occult shop where she lived. Once she came to my
little apartment and had thoroughly checked to be sure no other cats
were around, the highest she ever went was the window sill and back of
the couch.

Also, she wonders what you did with the dog. After all, you took him
out of the house, and didn't bring him back. Give her lots of love
and affection when you are around, and she'll start to cope.
