After experimenting with yhe height of my saddle, I developed an awful pain in my lower back after a long 70 km ride. My saddle position was higher then usual, but it felt good initially. Could this back pain be the result of this saddle position?

If you raise your saddle too much so that your hips start moving up and down, then your lower back may start moving in a manner that can cause pain. This is probably more common on road riding where your position is more static.
Have somebody help you steady your bike or put it in a trainer. Pedal backwards, or forwards if you're on the trainer, with your heals on the pedals and wearing your biking shoes. If you cannot do this without losing contact with the pedal at the bottom stroke, or have to stretch your hips down in order not to lose contact with the pedal, then your saddle most probably is too high.
Your back pain can of course also be a result of having your bars too low compared to your saddle now. Even if your saddle is not too high according to the definition above. You just have to bend over deeper to reach them.
Definitely. I used to get severe back pain after less than an hour of riding. I lowered the seat a bit, and the pain went away. It's lower than most people would probably recommend, but I can ride all day now and that's all that matters.

Try racing singlespeed, then you will know what lower backpain is!

Could be. I've got back problems that I'm told are aggravated by my tight hamstrings. By getting more extension, you may be forcing the muscles to stretch with each stroke. To compensate, other muscles may become fatigued or damaged. /s

I found, for me, that the stem length plays a big part in whether or not I experience a similar issue as you have mentioned. I tried stems of differing lengths until I settled on one that serves me well. Too short and I was (of course) all "hunched up." Too long and I felt like I was on one of those mid-evil torture racks in the pit of dispair. Of course some lengths were more or less OK with the seat low, but not at a normal height. Anyway I ramble on, good luck and have fun riding, hopefully.
