I have an old Trek 820 that I decided to change the rear wheel to a quick release. The axle does not come out quite far enough on the right side to let the free wheel clear the frame. Should I redish the wheel or use a different side spacer on the other side or something I have not thought of? The bike is a pre-mountain, pre combo somehwhat of a city bike with 18 speeds.

Your FRAME is not designed for a Quick Release Rear Hub.
If you have a Axle Mounted Derailleur, the skewer will not hold the load. Also the drop out will probably be 124 or 126mm not 130mm as used in a QR wheel.
I restored an old frame and stayed with the 3/8 bolt in type of wheel. See the link below:

The derailleur is not axle mounted although what you said is probably correct.
