I'm riding a Specialized Allez Elite, got it early this year (new, closeout) at the lbs and am not sure if it is a 06 or 07(Red & White) . I had a problem with creaking and clicking in the BB. Pedals were replaced, BB was removed and relubed, crank arms tightend and greased at the bolts, then finally they (lbs) R&R'd the BB with a new exact same and still the same problem. The third BB replacement had a metal sleeve inside instead of the plastic on the original and first replacement.... Still clicks and creaks.
The next visit to the lbs they ordered a new crank BB set. just had it put on the other day. The new three ring crankset is a Shimano Tiagra, which came with the BB in the set (btw, I know nothing about components).
The clicks and creaks are gone and I realize this is a long ways to get to my question but here it is... Is the Shimano Tiagra equal/superior to the Specialized house brand crank that came on the Allez Elite? Or have I rid my clicks and creaks for a lesser crankset?

I didn't even know that Specialized had/has a house brand crank. You may want to check on that.

See, I really dont know anything about components..LOL... I called it house brand because it was what came on the bike from Specialized factory...I cant remember the name of the crank that was on it originally, but it is something like Gossamer. Here is a closeup pic that I had taken of the original crank.

I believe that is an FSA component. Unlike Trek/Bontrager, Specialized does not manufacture its own components. My 2005 Tarmac Comp also has the FSR Gossamer crank on it and I haven't had any problems. So, it must be a hit or miss issue.
Glad to hear that you crank issue has been solved. Did they charge you anything for the work?

Hi Rob~ thanks for getting back to me. I too am glad that the problem has been taken care of, but being the worrier that I am, I just had wondered if the problem was solved with a lessor component. It's sweet to now have a quiet ride.

Checking the Specialized website, it looks like your bike is a 2005 - that's when they were using FSA Gossamer cranks for the Allez Elite.

I'm a worrier too. My son accuses me of having obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). So, you can imagine the [censored] I get from him. I'm not sure that the Shimano Tiagra is a lesser component - especially since it's a new Shimano Tiagar. You see, as with any bike component, the technology from the higher end components find its way down to the lower end components. So, Shimano Tiagra components are probably comparable to Shimano 105 or higher end from only a few years ago. I wouldn't worry, especially if the crank was changed out for free.

I accuse myself of having OCD..LOL.... I think it will be fine, I just needed a little reassurance and I have got it! Thanks alot! Also I am learning a little here just by asking some simple questions. I like the trickle down theory you mentioned about components, that is what has really eased my mind.😉 Almost forgot to mention that the new crankset and the labor was at no charge, all warranty work.

No worries. Ride carelessly, my friend. Well, you still gotta watch out for cars and other stuff but don't worry about your crank anymore.

Great . . . . . . Now my OCD won't allow me to rest easy. Thanks a lot - LOL. If you have OCD you know how it works. I won't be able to even remove the bike from the house until I know that my crank is okay.

Thanks for paralyzing me.

 Oh no...LOL...now I am worried about the 1/2 click (on the shifters) that I cant remember having to do with the original crank that I have to do with the new one to get the chain noise to stop...LOL....
