  1. Just a reminder to everyone that the above programme is on BBC2 at 8pm
tonight. If it's anything like his previous efforts - the superlative
Map Man, and the first (and by far the best) series of Coast, it
    should be a cracker.

Anyone else think it's a shame that the Cranester has given up on his
excellent travel books (Two Degrees West and Clear Waters Rising) and
is instead releasing bland, glossy coffee table efforts to accompany
    his TV shows?

It's the TV shows, particularly Map Man, that introduced me to his books
anyway. Probably more money in it for him, too, though he doesn't strike me
    as an overtly materialistic chap.

  3. Well, I thought it was great, far better than Mountain or Britain's
Best Views. If only they'd got Nick Crane to do the Mountain series
it would have been one of the best outdoors programmes ever (not that
Griff isn't good, it's just that Nick is SO much better!).

I do feel sorry for Nick's camera team, that's a tough job!

Only criticism - I see they've still got those ridiculous slo-mo
camera shots which were such an irritating feature of Map Man.

What did you all think? To my regret I've only (so far) been to Skye
and Staffa, so I don''t know how accurately he portrayed the rest of
    the area.

I am also a fan of his and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the
programme. We thought the second series of Coast not as good as the
first, almost entirely due to him not presenting it.

Thanks for the heads-up - I enjoyed watching.

I turned on whilst he was accompanied by a shepherd in the inevitable rain,
and this got me thinking what a difference there was in their wet weather
clothing. Surely, walkers and (hill) shepherds have fairly similar
requirements, but the typical clothing seen in use varies widely. Are we
walkers missing something, or is it the shepherds (and hill farmers) who are
missing out? I wouldn't know - my older gear lets rain through, and my
newer gear hasn't been properly tested yet.

    I think there are some differences in requirements;

Farmer; robust against tears, cuts, wear from animals and their work. Worn
every day all year. Cannot afford new item after 100 days maximum wet
weather use. Must be repairable. May need to spend time "standing around"
(eg. instructing dog to round up stock). Probably has access to landrover or
off-road quad bike. If warmer dry day, can leave wet weather coat on
vehicle, or fencepost, or other convinient place. Knows how far it is (and
usually not that far) to dry building for cup of tea. Probably knows
locallity very well, so able to predict local weather more accurately than
    visitor.

Walker; light or fairly light gear (to be carried much of time). Worn by
most owners perhaps 20 days per year (count your annual holiday, then the
number of wet days, is it really as bad as 20?). Will be used mostly when
moving, so generating heat. Unlikely to get tears/cuts due to activity
(climbers differ here). Most Walker's budget permits replacement after
relatively few days of use. Less able to predict time out in wet away from
    warm dry base.

And then there is the "fashionable traditions" which cause people to follow
    their herd.
Thus the outdoor market has Goretex in everything, including quite useless
    applications.

What a superb programme. One fit guy. His speed on that scree! I was
periodically in oxygen debt just watching. I must admit that I saw
only the odd few minutes of his Coast. I must check see if there is a
    DVD for sale.

It would be interesting to know some of the details of the making of
that last programme. Camera crew logistics? Helicopter?

I happened to be in Craster the day that the Coast programme was being
filmed there. The whole village was full of vans and the usual
paraphernalia you get for a TV shoot (I recognised what was going on
immediately as I live in the Where the heart setting of 'Skelthwaite'.
It aint just the presenter and a cameraman - and they dont just do the
    walk in one take either.

What they don't seem to bring along is a "continuity girl" - I'm sure
that there was one moment when he walked on in a blue anorak, and came
round the corner in a red one!
