  1. hi forgive this stupid question.

I'm looking for a watch for starting running where i can program a run
and walk schedule so i know when to stop one and start the other

I know there is the Garmin Forerunner 305 but i dont want to spend too
much at this point as just getting into running for a 5k or a 10k in
    the next 3 months

So something which i can put in a 5 run and 1 walk for 5 or 8 times
    would be good

extras like heart rate monitor a bonus.

You don't need to spend any money. In my opinion these artificial
crutches keep you from the natural improvement that could happen
    faster without them.
If you have a brain, you can figure out a course where you run a
certain segment and walk the next. Again, it's just my opinion, but I
believe in walking or running and not both. When I recover from an
injury, I walk and walk faster until I'm sick of walking and even
passing some slow joggers. Then I convert to running the next day and
don't look back to walking until I must with another injury. I have
never walked more than two weeks even with a bone fracture.
If you don't have a medical issue, knowing your heart rate at this
    nascent stage is meaningless.

Even a cheap Timex Ironman without heart monitor or any such geegaws
will allow you to set the countdown timer to 6:00, in a mode which
starts counting down again once it hits zero. So you start it at
6:00, walking, and when it gets down to 5:00 you break into a run.
It'll beep when it's time for your walk break. When it reads 5:00
    again, run.

If you space out a little on the walk break and you end up running
4:30 instead of 5:00 once or twice, I guarantee your legs won't know
the difference. The contemporary first-world mind is obsessed with
    precision; the body is not.

I have a cheap Ironman with two interval timers. You can set them separately
& they'll repeat the sequence until you push stop. There's also a countdown
timer. I haven't tried running all three at once (with or without the
    chronometer running as well).

If it matters to you or even just entertains you, this watch comes in
    different colors!

As someone who actually tried that - using interval timers to council walk
breaks - I can say one thing: bad idea! The best way I've found is to track
the run/walk segments in 2.5 min blocks or 5 min blocks. For example, do 2
mins running 30 seconds walking. Just learn to check your watch. It will
become second nature, and if you miss one, just compensate. It gives your
brain something to do instead of spacing out (though that's nice too). You
can also change the pattern during the run.

I still use walk breaks at times on recovery runs, and I swear by them. The
main goal for my recovery runs is to keep the legs active and supple, but
not to stress them in any way. If my legs feel really heavy I might even
start with 1:30 run 1:00 walk 2.5 min blocks, progressing later to 4:30 run
0:30 walk 5 min blocks, or just running slow. This lets me work the fatigue
out of them. If the legs never loosen up on recovery days, the last workout
was too hard, and in that case, I just do walk breaks the whole run.

Interesting. Mine lacks the interval timer, I'm pretty sure. My
impression is there's dozens of slightly different feature sets out
there on the Ironman variants released over the years.

First one I bought years ago had HRM which I used on about three
occasions. When I finally replaced it (broke it trying to replace
battery), I like the new cheaper non-HRM one a lot better: in chrono
mode it has two separate lines, one for overall time, one for time of
the current split. I appreciate that, especially in races.

Oh man, I've got the check that out, and maybe buy three of 'em - one
to match each differently colored pair of Corsa Sette in my current
rotation! Thanks for the tip, beej.

Assuming you're serious & not making fun of nutty-ole-me.....
I've seen these watches at various times at marathon expos, Walmart, & the
watch-store at an outlet center. I haven't looked at their online offerings.
I've paid $30-40 or so IIRC, depending on sales & deals & whatnot.

So far I've collected a blue, yellow, & (new) light grey; also a sort of
lime green -- but that one has a black face with light numbers and is much
harder to read in a hurry. It's the bands that are different colors.

I like to get my gadgets in different colors if possible (though the new
laptop I wanted didn't come in the color I wanted & the model that came in
the color I wanted didn't have other attributes I wanted). I just got a
blood glucose meter in green! Such Excitement!
    Enjoy!

Maybe 30% serious - it *would* take my running stylishness to the next
level, but then that may be a level to which I need not aspire. The
remainder is making fun of nutty-old-me (or the more cartoonish facets
of my online persona anyhow), not you. I don't know you well enough
to really poke much fun at you, bj. Yet.

    Wee-haw! Are extra-spiffy lancets available?

You could always wear two watches on your runs. 🙂)

    Actually, yes.
I haven't seen them lately (haven't looked that hard, anyway I have a *huge*
supply of lancets right now) but Rite-Aid has house-brand color lancets!!!!

Some of us have to take our entertainment where we can. If using a color
lancet (for the 2 seconds I see it when changing it twice a week or so in
the lancing device) is the wee-est bit of buzz, then I say go for it.
Besides, they look pretty in the clear-plastic bottle I put the used ones
    in.
    Wee-haw indeed!
    :-)

And you have to consider the safety issue. If you were to go for a run
with all those colorful gadgets up and down your arms and legs, well,
you would become a "person of interest" for just about everyone from
pervs to Homeland Security. We would hate to see you become someone's
love slave, not at least until you solve the mold issue and can breathe
deeply to enjoy the fondling. 🙂 Up here in the clean air we have our
share of rednecks that would love to take those toys for a ride in the
old "Deliverance" pickup truck. Can I say squeal like a pig.

An expert on "deliverance" has spoken.

I bet you got on all fours and squealed like a pig, just for fun as
you posted that, didn't you sicko?
