  1. Sometime early this morning, before I was even awake, I turned 80.

So I'd like to apply for the post of Official RFC Dowager, which, to the
best of my knowledge is vacant. If there's anyone here who is 80-plus, speak
now or forever hold your peace.

But aren't dowagers kind of scary and forbidding? Always with
    the black shawl?

Doesn't Margaret Suran have that title? I think she is about that
    age...maybe older...

I hope you get the title. If you are wealthy, I may be interested in
    marrying you.

    Happy birthday.

Happy Birthday! You are by no means the oldest rfc'er. I will be 81 in
less than a month and there is at least one more poster who is older
    than you. :o)

I hope you have a wonderful birthday and many, many more. Margaret

Congratulations, Felice! Unless someone arms wrestles you for it, I
    bet you'll get the job.

Even if not our oldest, I think the more dowagers (dignified, older woman),
the better. So, if someone else holds the title, I think you can be part
of her posse; er, I mean entourage.

A posse of dowagers? I love it! Get out of their way and don't mess
    with them.

    Happy day to you Felice!

It turns out that Margaret already holds the title and I wouldn't think of
trying to usurp her. However, I hope she'll allow me to be one of her
    groupies.

But "dignified"? Not on your life.

Dowagers, imo, just sit around and dispense quelling looks through their
little glasses. Sometimes they tap their cane sharply to scare little kids
and lazy servants. Maybe Felice can be the AiC: Aunty in Charge.
Looking forward to being a dowager myself one of these days. Been
    practicing with the cane thing.

I remember the term from the title "Empress Dowager."

    Here is some clarification-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowager

"In loose popular usage, dowager as a stand-alone noun may refer to
any elderly woman, especially one who is wealthy or behaves with
    dignity."

I suspect our 80+ y.o. rfc members are among the few here who do
behave with dignity on a consistent basis. 🙂

Sue, I sent this out a couple of hours ago, but it never showed up, at
least not on my computer screen. After you read it, you may not think
of me as quite as dignified as you expect me to be.

Dear Dowager Felice, I do not want to be The Dowager. Could you,
please, offer me something else instead? Even being a Bimbo sounds
better than a Dowager or being the Blonde in all the many jokes sounds
    much more enticing.

If you ask me, being 80 is not much fun. :o(

However, today is your birthday and we can discuss Age at some future date.

BIMBO??!?!?!?!? I highly think not. (I'm smiling as I'm typing this,
    though.)

You cut yourself way too short, my friend. You are widely embraced and you
are wise beyond your age. We love you.

Interesting. Until this moment, my experience of the word came entirely
from Georgette Heyer novels. In them, the dowager is the titled lady
whose husband has died making her eldest son and his wife the legal
holders of the title and the property owners. For a made-up example:
William is married to Arabella. He's a duke which makes her the
duchess. Their son, John, is married to Sophia. As long as Sir William
is alive, John and Sophia have no title. He's the heir, but he doesn't
own the land. When Sir William dies, John becomes the duke; Sophia
becomes the new Lady, and Arabella becomes the dowager. She might own
property in her own name, or she might not. Either way, the real
estate, meaning the land with tenants living on it, is passed down to
the eldest son. Younger sons are bought positions in the army or become
clerics. Ideally, the dowager lives with her son, but it makes for
better drama if the evil daughter-in-law kicks her out.
