Sure, you can take out all the spacers and cut the axle down if you
like, but the wheel will have to be redished to center the rim. The
result could be a wheel that's unstable because the left side spokes
are almost slack.

You should probably take some measurements from the hub and the
spacers you would have to remove to get the spacing you require. If
the remaining center-to-flange spacing on the right is less than about
1/3 of the center-to-flange spacing on the left, the wheel will be
very weak no matter how many spokes it has, or how strong the rim is.
Keeping tension on the left may prove difficult as well.

cannot be widened, but my schwinn voyageur can - it is also 124 columbus
tubing. thanks in advance

Just built one of those hubs. You'll find 135mm easily attainable, 132
is about the limit.

Thank you for the info. I noticed that the rim was in the middle when I put
the drive side against the stay- it may not need re dished. Is it safe to
have the rear stays widened from 124 to 135 on my tourer ?
